Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - RHP Ryan Pope (2-2) hurled seven scoreless frames and Trenton (15-15) scored three runs in the first inning, taking the final game of the series from the Portland Sea Dogs (16-15), 5-0 on Wednesday night at Waterfront Park. Despite the loss, the Sea Dogs took 2 of 3 from the Thunder and continue their 8-game roadtrip on Thursday night in New Britain.
Pope, who was the first player ever drafted out of the Savannah College of Art and Design (same school as former Sea Dog Charlie Zink), allowed just three baserunners on one hit and two hit batters. 1B Lars Anderson (1-for-3) singled off the righty in the fourth inning; who finished the night with six strikeouts. Pope was perfect in 5 of 7 innings and retired the final 10 batters faced.
Trenton RHP Kanekoa Texeira closed out the game with two perfect frames as Trenton's pitchers combined to retire the final sixteen batters and 26 of 30 on the night.
RHP Ryne Lawson (0-1) made his first start since April 12 and took the loss for Portland. Lawson, who was on the disabled list from April 14-May 12, yielded three runs over 4.2 IP on five hits, four walks and two strikeouts.
Trenton sent nine men to the plate in the first inning, scoring three runs off Lawson on four hits. LF Colin Curtis (1-for-4, RBI) knocked in the game's first run with an RBI single. The right-hander was aided by a 5-4-3 double-play (scoring a run) but walked 2B Justin Snyder (1-for-1, RBI, 3 RBI) to force in the third run. Lawson retired 10 of 12 after the first and was relieved by RHP Justin Hedrick (1.1 IP, 0 R) the bases empty in the fifth inning.
RHP Richie Lentz allowed Trenton's final two runs on 1B Jorge Vazquez's 2-run double in the seventh inning. Portland's best scoring chance came in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with one out but DH Jon Still hit into an inning-ending double play. Anderson (single), Bates (HBP) and 3B Jorge (HB) were the three baserunners for Portland. 2B Ryan Khoury reached on a shortstop's error to lead-off the fourth inning.
