Double Trouble...The Aeros lost last night by the final score of 7-4, marking the first back-to-back losses for the club in 2009. Akron had won all five games coming off a loss this year by an average score of 7.2 to 2.4 until Tuesday's defeat, and the 15 hits allowed to Bowie were the second most permitted by Aeros pitchers this season. With the loss, the Aeros will lose their first series of the season, after taking hold of their first eight to start the year. By comparison, Akron did not win its eighth series of the 2008 season until playing at Portland June 6th - 8th.
Cold Feet...The Aeros are batting just .177 (11-62) with runners in scoring position over their last seven games, including a 1-12 performance last night. Akron was one of the best in the business in clutch hitting through the first 22 games of the season, hitting .285 with men in scoring position, but has now dropped to sixth in the Eastern League in this category at .258 overall.
Some Good News...Reliever Randy Newsom appeared in his first game back with the Aeros yesterday after returning from Class AAA Columbus. In two innings out of the bullpen, the single-season and all-time saves leader for Akron allowed one run, one hit and one walk. The native of Cincinnati, OH was the anchor of a strong Aeros relief unit last season, going 5-1 in 47 appearances with 3.00 ERA, while his 30 saves combined between Buffalo and Akron were tied for sixth most in the minors. This year, Newsom has now appeared in seven games for the Aeros, and has a 2-0 record with one save and a 1.74 ERA.
The Trojan War...Left-hander Troy Patton will look to defeat Akron for the third time this season this morning. In two earlier starts against the Aeros this year, the 23-year-old Texan has pitched 11 shutout innings, giving up six hits while striking out nine. In both of those starts, the Baysox relievers finished off his strong starts by completing the shutouts, the only two times this season Akron has failed to score a run. In fact, in the 12 games played against Bowie, Akron has been held under three runs four times, while in their other 17 games this feat has only happened twice.
And The Crowd Goes Wild...There have been large crowds throughout the series with Bowie this week, as a season-high 9,000 were in the house Monday night and then 5,513 were in attendance for Two for Tuesday yesterday. The Aeros expect over 7,500 for today's Education Day, bringing an estimated three-game attendance total to well over 22,000. If this holds intact, it will be the largest draw for a series this season, and will energize the scene for a team that still owns the best record in baseball.
STO Know-How...The Aeros game on Monday night against Bowie was recorded by SportsTime Ohio and will be shown on STO tomorrow at noon. If you are unable to catch that showing, it will also be played Monday, May 18th at 7 p.m.
