New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Jonathan Diaz set a franchise record by connecting for four of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats' club record-tying nine doubles, and Kyle Drabek allowed two runs over seven innings to notch his team-leading sixth victory as the Fisher Cats defeated the New Britain Rock Cats, 11-6, on Wednesday night at New Britain Stadium.

Diaz (4-for-5, 4 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R) broke a 1-1 tie with his first double of the game, a grounder over the third base bag off starter and losing pitcher David Bromberg in the fourth that scored Adam Loewen (single) all the way from first base. Brian Jeroloman (2-for-4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI) followed with an RBI single to right, scoring Diaz for a 3-1 lead.

Diaz and Jeroloman would stroke back-to-back two-out doubles off Bromberg in the sixth, building the Fisher Cats' lead to 4-2.

Facing reliever Joe Testa in the seventh, Diaz plated Loewen with a two-bagger into the left field corner to cap a four-run stanza, making it 8-2. Earlier in the inning, Adam Calderone (3-for-5, 2B, HBP, SB, R) scored when he and Brad Emaus (2-for-5, 2B, SB, 2 R) pulled off a double steal, and catcher Jair Fernandez committed a throwing error into left. Loewen (2-for-5, RBI, 2 R) then knocked in Emaus with a single, and Shawn Bowman, who walked, crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Diaz's record-setting double occurred in the top of the ninth, a gap shot to left-center off Chris Province that scored David Cooper (1-for-3, 2B, 2 BB, R), who led off with a double of his own. Diaz subsequently scored his third run of the game on a double-play grounder, giving the Fisher Cats (28-18) a commanding 11-4 lead.

Drabek (6-4) yielded two runs on six hits in seven innings, with three strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander upped his Eastern League-leading strikeout total to 51, took over the league lead in innings pitched (59.2) and moved into sole possession of third place in the league in victories.

Bromberg (2-3) lost for the third time in four starts after issuing four runs on nine hits in six innings, with two strikeouts and two walks.

New Britain (13-32) took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Erik Lis had a run-scoring fielder's choice grounder, scoring Brandon Roberts (walk).

Darin Mastroianni (1-for-6, RBI) tied the game, 1-1, with a second-inning bases-loaded single that scored Bowman (2-for-4, 2B, BB, 2 R, RBI).

The Rock Cats got to Fisher Cats' reliever Boomer Potts in the late innings. Lis (1-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, and Ben Revere (double) and Roberts (ground out) each had ninth-inning RBIs.

Fernandez (2-for-4, 3B, 2 R) tripled off Drabek and scored on a Chris Cates ground out in the bottom of the fifth.

New Hampshire and New Britain play the rubber game of their five-game series on Thursday morning at 10:35am with the Fisher Cats sending right-hander Randy Boone (2-2, 2.57) to the mound against Rock Cats righty Santos Arias (0-6, 4.50). Fisher Cats Pre-Game begins at 10:15am on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy and Bob Lipman.
