Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - For the second consecutive night, the Binghamton Mets had their way with the Flying Squirrels, dumping Richmond, 9-1, in game three of a four-game series on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium.

Squirrels' starter Mike MacDonald endured a disastrous first inning, as the B-Mets came out swinging to plate five runs in the frame. Kirk Nieuwenhuis got the trouble started with a lead-off double. Luis Hernandez singled behind him and Nick Evans bounced into fielder's choice that allowed him to score the game's first run. Marshall Hubbard then cracked a single and Eric Campbell followed with a single to score Evans. D.J. Wabick made it three consecutive singles to load the bases, still with one out. Omir Santos then sent a groundball to first base that Juan Ciriaco threw into left field, allowing two more runs to score. Jose Coronado followed and capped the five-run inning with an RBI single for a 5-0 B-Mets' lead.

The B-Mets picked up right where they left off in the second inning. Hernandez led off the inning and curled a solo-home run around the right-field foul pole for a 6-0 lead. Evans reached on an error on Brandon Crawford and later scored on another RBI single from Eric Campbell.

MacDonald (1-4) was lifted after Campbell's single, lasting just an inning plus. It marked the shortest outing of the season for a Richmond starter as he lost for the fourth time. The final line for MacDonald included seven runs - five earned - on eight hits. He walked one and struck out none.

Richmond got on the board against Binghamton starter Eric Niesen without the benefit of a hit in the third inning. Nick Noonan walked to lead off the inning and moved to third when Niesen threw away a sacrifice bunt from Craig Whitaker. Darren Ford brought him in with a sacrifice fly.

Niesen allowed just that unearned run, departing after 3 1/3 innings due to a lowered pitch count. He did not allow a hit, walking three and striking out one.

Whitaker stayed on the mound after taking over for MacDonald in the second and allowed a solo-home run to Nieuwenhuis in the third. The blast to right-center field bumped the lead to 8-1. Binghamton tacked on an unearned run against Whitaker in the fourth for a 9-1 advantage.

Right-hander Edgar Ramirez (2-0) came on in relief of Niesen in the fourth inning and ultimately was awarded the win for Binghamton. He worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two.

The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for 10:35 am on Thursday morning at NYSEG Stadium. RHP Ronnie Ray (0-1, 5.70) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Chris Schwinden (1-0, 1.50) for Binghamton.
