Devils Take Down Falcons, 4-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Lowell Devils (35-25-5-6) received goals from four different players and skated to a 4-2 victory over the Springfield Falcons (26-43-1-2) at MassMutual Center on Wednesday. The victory moved Lowell back into a tie with the Worcester Sharks for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division.

The Devils led 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of play. Ryan Murphy put the road team in front 7:53 into the game with his 17th of the season, banking the puck in off a Falcons defenseman. The goal moved him into a tie with David Clarkson (who remains on recall to New Jersey) for second on the team. Frank Doyle stopped all eight Springfield shots in the period, and got a little assistance from the iron as the Falcons rang a pair of shots off the posts, including an opportunity in the final minute.

Grant Marshall made it 2-0 Devils at 12:18 of the period. The veteran picked up his seventh of the season by redirecting a drive by Dan McGillis. Just 58 seconds later Lowell made it 3-0. Stephen Gionta sent a wrister past G Jonathan Boutin for his sixth of the season. Rookie Brad Mills picked up his first career point with the primary assist. Kyle Wanvig put the Falcons on the board at 17:21 with a power play goal of his own, to make it 3-1 Devils after two periods.

The Devils extended the lead back to three with a tally by Rod Pelley, fresh from his recall to the New Jersey Devils. The goal was his 14th of the season, and Chris Minard and Barry Tallackson picked up the assists. Wanvig netted his second of the night 10:29 to bring it back to a two-goal game. Lowell held on the rest of the way for the win, outshooting the Falcons 30-27 in the process.

The Devils welcomed the return of Pelley and LW Tuomas Pihlman to the lineup tonight. Both players were recently assigned to Lowell from New Jersey earlier this week.

Coming up next weekend is Guns & Hoses Night on Friday, March 30th against the Portland Pirates, with the first 1,000 fans getting a free puck, courtesy of Trinity EMS.
