Phantoms To Hold Umberger Bobblehead Night

March 28, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

PHILADELPHIA - In 2004-05, R.J. Umberger had the finest season of any rookie in Phantoms history. Now fully ingrained as a homegrown member of the Philadelphia Flyers, the Phantoms are honoring Umberger with a bobblehead night this Friday when they host the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 at the Wachovia Spectrum. The first 4,000 fans will receive the collectible R.J. Umberger bobblehead courtesy of Comcast.

The bobblehead features Umberger in his customary No. 20, which he also wore with the Phantoms. He is depicted in the Phantoms home white jersey, complete with the alternate captain's "A" that he wore during the first eight games of the 2005-06 Phantoms season.

Umberger played three years at Ohio State from 2000 to 2003 and took home a host of awards from his career there, including the 2000-01 CCHA Rookie of the Year Award. He was a Hobey Baker Award finalist following his senior year and earned a spot on the CCHA All-Star first team following his final season in 2002-03.

Umberger was a first-round draft pick (16th overall) of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. His rights were traded to the New York Rangers in March of 2004, but he became a free agent after failing to reach a contract agreement with the Rangers. He signed with the Flyers as a free agent on June 16, 2004.

Umberger was a key component of the Phantoms squad that won the 2004-05 Calder Cup. He shattered the Phantoms rookie scoring marks, posting 21 goals and 44 assists for 65 points during the campaign - all new franchise records - while appearing in all 80 games. During the team's run to the Cup, he posted three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 21 playoff games. Umberger then started the 2005-06 season with the Phantoms, but was recalled by the Flyers after eight games and never returned.

"It's definitely exciting," Umberger said of the bobblehead. "I collect bobbleheads, so to have my own is pretty neat. My family and friends are already asking for them back home."

Individual tickets are still available for Friday's game with Norfolk, as well as all remaining Phantoms home games, including $8 tickets for children 14 and under anywhere in the building. They are on sale now at phantomshockey.com or by calling 800-298-4200.
