Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Charleston, WV - The Delmarva Shorebirds bounced back with a 6-2 win over the West Virginia Power on Monday evening. A day after being shut out, the Shorebirds (23-20) countered with their own solid pitching performance to take a 2-1 advantage in the series.

Delmarva leapt out to a lead in the first inning, though they failed to truly take advantage of an early opportunity. The Shorebirds loaded the bases with no outs on Power starter Shane Carle thanks to a single, hit by pitch and error. However, Trey Mancini bounced into a double play to hamper any rally. Yastrzemski scored to make it 1-0, but that was all Delmarva mustered.

West Virginia answered in the bottom of the first, jumping on Delmarva starter Steven Brault to take a 2-1 lead. The first three batters reached off Brault after a leadoff walk and a pair of singles. Danny Collins lined out back to Brault, but JaCoby Jones scored on an error by Justin Viele after Brault attempted to double off the runner at second base.

The Shorebirds retook the lead with three runs in the second inning. Justin Viele bounced a double down the third base line, bringing home Josh Hart to tie the game. With runners on second and third, Yastrzemski reached on an error as a grounder deflected off the glove of Jones at short into center. Both Lorenzo and Viele scored to give Delmarva a 4-2 lead. Yastrzemski was ejected from the game moments later, arguing an out call on a pickoff.

After the first inning, Brault settled down for another quality start. Brault finished the night with six innings, two runs (one earned) allowed on four hits. It was the left-hander's sixth quality start in his last seven outings. He has not allowed more than two runs in a start since Opening Day.

Delmarva added a few insurance runs in the eighth inning. Trey Mancini delivered an RBI single, and Chance Sisco lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.

Dennis Torres finished off the win with three scoreless innings in relief, including three straight groundball outs in the ninth. Torres earned the nine-out save, his second of the year. Brault improved to 4-2 with the win, while Shane Carle fell to 1-4 with the defeat.

The Shorebirds will go for their fourth straight series win on Tuesday morning. Delmarva turns to left-hander Mitch Horacek (1-4, 3.35) in the finale against West Virginia right-hander Buddy Borden (0-2, 2.23). First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 am at Appalachian Power Park.
