Dominant Start by Alvarez Earns League Honors

Savannah, GA - Savannah Sand Gnats pitcher Dario Alvarez was named South Atlantic League pitcher of the Week for May 12 - May 18. The 25-year-old lefthander struck out 12 batters, tying a career high during his stellar start on Wednesday, May 14.

Alvarez has contributed to the first place Sand Gnats all season, owning a 2-0 record with aminuscule0.36 ERA over 25 innings pitched. The Santiago, Dominican Republic, native has piled up 39strikeouts to just eight walks and has allowed just one earned run over his three starts and four relief appearances.

His best outing yet was against the Greenville Drive on Wednesday. The Mets prospect gave up just three hits over five innings, allowing just one walk. After Alvarez fanned 12 hitters, relievers Dawrin Frias and Tyler Vanderheiden struck out another seven Drive batters for a season-high 19 combined strikeouts.

Alvarez was signed by the New York Mets in 2013 as a non-drafted free agent where he flourished with the short-season Brooklyn Cyclones, accumulating a 3.10 ERA with 57 strikeouts over 12 games. Prior to signing with the Mets, Alvarez pitched in the Philadelphia Phillies Organization with the Dominican Summer League Phillies from 2007-2009.

Asheville Tourists catcher Ashley Graeter was also awarded weekly honors as Player of the Week.
