Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, Ga. - The Savannah Sand Gnats used a pair of home runs and seven shutout innings from Kevin McGowan to snap a three-game losing streak with a 6-0 victory Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

McGowan threw a career-high seven shutout innings to earn his second win of 2014. He struck out four and walked two, while yielding two hits.

The Gnats (29-14) scored twice in each of the first three innings.

In the first, 3B Jeff McNeil doubled home RF Patrick Biondi and then scored on

1B Dominic Smith's single through the left side.

In the second, 2B Jorge Rivero yanked a two-run homerun out to left field, his first since 2012 to put the Gnats up 4-0.

Shortstop LJ Mazzilli led off the third inning with a solo homerun of his own, his third of the year, over the manual scoreboard in left-center field for a 5-0 lead. Later in the inning, CF Champ Stuart singled into center, driving home DH Victor Cruzado for his first Sand Gnats RBI.

The RiverDogs (23-20) only had one runner reach third all game against McGowan and reliever Paul Paez.

Smith left the game after grounding into a doubleplay in the fifth inning after fouling a ball off his foot earlier in the at-bat.

The Gnats will hand the ball to RHP Ricky Knapp (2-2, 3.41) Tuesday against RHP Jaron Long (2-1, 2.59). Fans can enjoy buy-one get-one-free Miller Light and Coors Lite for a special Two-For-Tuesday TailsSpin Bark in the Park.
