Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 19, 2014) - The Hickory Crawdads clubbed three home runs over the first three innings, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead on their way to a 10-6 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Monday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
Hickory completed a team-cycle in the first inning when Kevin Torres launched a 3-run home run to right field for a 5-0 lead. Earlier in the inning, Evan Van Hoosier tripled and Nick Vickerson doubled before a pair of other Crawdads collected base hits. Five of the games first six batters hit safely and scored.
In the second inning, Joe Jackson - the great-great-great nephew of "Shoeless Joe" Jackson - blasted a 3-run home run to give the Crawdads a 7-0 lead. Ryan Cordell's solo blast led off the third inning and made it 8-0.
Kannapolis (21-22) scored five runs in the sixth and seventh innings, four of them coming from batters who took advantage of walks to reach base. Trey Michalczewski drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, the fourth walk of the inning as the fifth batter of the frame. Carl Thomore followed with an RBI-single that right fielder Nomar Mazara bobbled, allowing an extra run to score, cutting the Crawdads lead to 9-6. The Intimidators had the tying run at the plate with one out in the seventh, but Cody Kendell retired the next eight batters, finishing the game on the mound for Hickory.
Jake Sanchez (4-2) took the loss for the Intimidators, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits - including three home runs - with six strikeouts and a walk. It was the first time an Intimidators pitcher allowed three home runs in a game since Dexter Carter gave up a trio to the Lake County Captains on May 10, 2009.
Crawdads starter Akeem Bostick (2-2) earned the win, allowing one run over 5.0 innings.
The Intimidators and Crawdads wrap up this 4-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Every Tuesday is Arby's Two-for-Tuesday featuring 2-for-1 tickets when fans present any Arby's proof of purchase at the F&M Bank Box Office.
