Defensive miscues cost the RailCats a pair of runs as they fell to Kansas City 5-3 on Monday night in their series opener. The RailCats dropped to 2-3 on the season.

Kyle Haines' error at short in the third led to an unearned run for starter Mike Perconte (0-1). After the error, Brandon Jones and Lee Cruz hit back-to-back sac flies to put the T-Bones on top 2-1. In the fourth, right fielder Mike Massaro's throwing error brought home a run to make it 3-1. The T-Bones added two in the fifth on a solo homer by Reid Fronk and RBI single by Bubby Williams.

The RailCats cut into the lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Adam Klein. They threatened in the ninth, with two singles and an RBI groundout by Klein. With the tying run at the plate, Massaro flew out to end the game.

The RailCats struck first in the third inning, as Klein reached on an infield single and stole second. Craig Maddox drove him home with an RBI single to right to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.

Perconte surrendered four runs, three earned, on nine hits in 4 2/3 in the loss. Former RailCat Brian Grening (1-0) held the 'Cats to two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 for the victory. Jake Wiley picked up the save for Kansas City.
