Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - A crowd of 3,946 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium paid no admission fee to see the Sox take on the Winnipeg Goldeyes. After two hours and forty-seven minutes, the Goldeyes beat the Sox 9-3 and Winnipeg completes the series sweep.
The Sox would trail early as Goldeye players Chris Roberson, Price Kendall, and Jon Weber loaded the bases with three consecutive singles, which led to a pair of bases-loaded walks and later an Amos Ramon two-RBI single to make it 4-0 in the first inning. The Goldeyes would strike again in the fourth and sixth innings with RBIs from Kendall and Weber, both runs coming from walks.
Matt Tucker hit in Chuck Lofgren to cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth. The Sox came even closer in the seventh inning when an errant throw to second on a passed ball allowed Garret Rau to score from third base. Jake Opitz's sac fly to left in the same inning brought the Sox within three, making it 6-3.
However in the top of the eighth, it was a sac fly, double, and a single that added three more runs to the Goldeyes' lead. The Sox would not be able to come back from the six-run deficit in the final two innings.
Sox starter, Jack Spradlin (0-1) is pinned with the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out five in his five innings of work. Matt Rusch (1-0) gets the win for the Goldeyes, going five and a third, allowing one run, none earned, and striking out three with only one walk.
Newly acquired reliever Derek Christensen for the Sox, pitched the sixth and seventh innings, giving up one earned run on one hit. Chad Povich, with an ERA of 6.75, pitched the last two innings for the Sox, allowing three runs on three hits and had a strikeout and a walk.
Goldeye reliever Barrett Phillips cleaned up to get the last two outs of the sixth inning, then Alex Jones started the seventh, and gave up two runs on two walks and a hit, moving his ERA to 7.72. Kaohi Downing came in with an out in the seventh and pitched the entire eighth inning, only allowing two hits with two strikeouts. Chris Kaminski came in for the ninth, shutting out the Sox' last inning and giving up just one hit.
After the loss, the Sox are 0-3 while Winnipeg improves to 3-0. Monday night, the Sox will face Fargo-Moorehead in the first game of a three-game series at ANB Sox Stadium.
