
Jackals Take Inaugural Game from Wingnuts

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 5-1 to the New Jersey Jackals at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.
New Jersey scored twice in the top of the first and held the lead through the end of the game. Gaetano Giunta singled to center on the first pitch of the game and moved to second on Angel Berroa's sacrifice bunt. Bryan Sabatella chased Giunta to third with a single to right. Wingnuts' starter Ben Graham struck out Francisco Caraballo for the second out, but Nick Giarraputo singled to right to drive in Giunta for the first run of the game. Carlos Guzman and Jeff Lanning then drew consecutive walks to force in New Jersey's second run.
The Jackals used an unearned run in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead when Sabatella hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
In the top of the sixth, Giunta singled to left with one out and scored three batters later on a two-out, RBI single through the left side from Caraballo.
Jared McDonald put the Wingnuts on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to right-center. Zach Woods relieved Jackals' starter Kyle Greenwalt following the home run. Woods walked two, but managed to escape further trouble.
Starter Josh Lowey worked a scoreless relief inning in the top of the seventh. Matt Nevarez struck out the side on 11 pitches in the top of the eighth without throwing a ball.
Caraballo hit a solo home run to left-center in the top of the ninth to give New Jersey a 5-1 lead.
Graham took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits in six innings. Graham walked three and struck out three.
Greenwalt earned the win, allowing one earned run on three hits. Greenwalt struck out seven and walked one in five and one-third innings.
With the loss, the Wingnuts are 2-3 and drop below .500 for the first time since August 14th, 2010.
