Dayton Gems: Weekend Review
February 28, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
The Dayton Gems started their weekend homestand off on the right foot Friday night with a 6-5 win over Evansville, and ended it on an even stronger note by shutting out Fort Wayne 8-0.
The wins highlighted a weekend in which the Gems outscored their opponents 16-9 and outshot them 128-97.
Evansville vs. Dayton: Friday, Feb. 25. 6-5 Win
Over the past few weeks, the Dayton Gems have struggled to take shots and score goals.
That wasn't the case on Friday night. Dayton took 59 shots on goal - shattering the previous season high of 41. The Gems' five goals in regulation were the most the team has scored since Jan. 20.
Despite the offensive effort, the game still went into overtime and a shootout before the Gems could sew up the 6-5 win.
Tim Hartung scored the first goal in the shootout and that was all it took as Dayton's goaltender Jeff Jakaitis held the IceMen scoreless in the shootout.
The win was big for the Gems as they snapped a three game losing streak and put some room between themselves and the IceMen in the Turner Conference standings.
Quad City vs. Dayton: Saturday, Feb. 26. 4-2 Loss
The Dayton Gems kept their game with Quad City close for most of the game, but came up on the wrong end of a 4-2 game on Saturday night.
In front of 3,611 fans, the Gems took 30 shots at the goal but were only able to record two goals on the night.
After going down 3-1 in the second period, the Gems tried to fight their way back into the game late in the third period. Brett Lutes scored after a faceoff near the Quad City goal to make it a 3-2 game with 8:44 left in the game.
The Mallards quickly shut the door on any comeback the Gems had in store. Obi Aduba scored for Quad City and handed Dayton the 4-2 loss.
Fort Wayne vs. Dayton, Sunday, Feb. 27. 8-0 Win
Heading into Sunday, the Dayton Gems had lost six straight games to Fort Wayne. Their last win against the Komets came on Dec. 26.
That streak came to an end in a big way on Sunday. The Gems defeated the Komets 8-0.
The eight goal win is the largest margin of victory of the season for Dayton. The previous best for the Gems had been four goals.
Many of Dayton's players had a big game in the shutout.
Jeff Jakaitis recorded his first shutout since Dec. 17, and just his second shutout of the season. He recorded 37 saves in the effort.
Chris Lipsett also had a big game with four goals on the evening.
Meanwhile, teammate Mike Vaskivuo just missed out on a hat trick by recording two goals.
The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
