Mallards Weekly Update

February 28, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

QUACK TRACKS

Back-to-Back

The Mallards won back-to-back road games Saturday night at Dayton and yesterday evening at Evansville after dropping their prior three games.

On the Road The Mallards Friday night will play their fifth straight road game. The Flock has gone 2-2-0 in its last four games.

Magic Number

The Mallards' magic number for clinching a playoff berth is five. Any combination of available standings points gained by the Flock or not collected by the Evansville IceMen- the ninth place team in the Turner Conference- will result in Quad City securing one of the eight Turner Conference postseason spots. A combination of results enabling the Mallards to reach the magic number would guarantee that the Flock would finish the regular season at worst tied with the IceMen. Quad City would win the tie-breaker- most wins (excluding shootout victories)- with Evansville because the Mallards have already won 29 games in regulation or overtime, while the IceMen can secure no more than 27 non-shootout victories this season even if they win all of their remaining games.

Playing Catch-Up

The Mallards this weekend face the two clubs directly above them in the Turner Conference standings. The Flock is just one point behind fourth place Missouri, but the Mavericks do have three games in hand on the Mallards. The Mallards are six points behind third place Bloomington. The PrairieThunder has also played three fewer games than the Mallards.

Comebacks The Mallards have come from behind in five of their last six wins and in nine of their last 11 victories. On the season, the Mallards have trailed at some point in 17 of their 30 victories.

Trifecta With last night's win, the Mallards improved to 7-2-0 this season when playing the final game in a stretch of three games in three nights.

Special Teams Quad City remains second in the league in penalty killing (84.7 percent) and ranks thirteenth on the power play (16.7 percent).

Defensive The Mallards allow 2.67 goals per game- second only to Missouri (2.65).

Offensive Only Evansville (2.81) scores fewer goals per game than the Mallards (2.82), who have scored two goals or fewer in four of their last five games.

30

The Mallards last night became the fifth team in the CHL to reach 30 wins this season. In 55 games, the Mallards have already topped their season total for wins (29) in 76 International Hockey League games last year.

G-Man Center Eric Giosa (26-22-48) leads the Mallards in goals, points and plus/minus rating (+11). Giosa registered a "Gordie Howe hat trick" last night by scoring, picking up an assist and getting into a fight with Evansville's Nicklas Lindberg. Giosa is not only in the midst of a four-game point-scoring streak (2-3-5), but has also totaled eight goals and 18 points in his last 15 games.

Brown Out Goaltender David Brown (15-13-1, 2.28, .931, 3 SO) has backstopped the Flock to wins in his first two games since returning to the Mallards last Thursday from the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies. Brown leads the league in save percentage, ranks second in goals against average and is tied for third in shutouts.

Call-Up Center Mike McLean (16-25-41), who was called up to the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals last Friday, has played in two games without recording a point for the Admirals.
