Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs News Release
MACON, GA - Eric Witzel and Steve Mele both scored twice, Matt Zenzola made 33 saves on 35 shots and the Rail Yard Dawgs hammered the Macon Mayhem, 5-2, Friday night at the Macon Coliseum.
Roanoke got the party started early in the first period on the power play. David Gandara fed Witzel moving toward the net. Witzel steered the puck past Troy Passingham's blocker and the Dawgs took a 1-0 lead.
Later in the period, Maxime Guyon stick-lifted a Mayhem defender and carried the puck in on a breakaway with Mele on his wing. He slid the pass to Mele who fired a shot on net and Roanoke's lead swelled to two.
Macon cracked back for one late in the period when Caleb Cameron finished a two-on-one break. The Dawgs ran away with it in the second period as Steve Mele scored in the opening minute. Gandara later buried a shorthanded breakaway to push the advantage to 4-1.
The Rail Yard Dawgs added one more early in the third when Witzel tucked in a rebound. Dennis Sicard scored a late goal for the Mayhem to bring the score to its 5-2 final.
Zenzola stopped 33 shots to earn the win in net, Witzel and Mele both had two goals, Gandara put up a goal and an assist and Guyon had two helpers.
