Macon Mayhem News Release
LAST GAME PLAYED:
The Mayhem are looking to get back on track, as they fell 4-1 in their last game at the hands of the Huntsville Havoc.
Roanoke has been one of the hottest teams in the SPHL, as they have won eight of their last ten, but they are coming off of a 5-1 loss to the Pensacola Ice Flyers in their last game.
SCOUTING THE DAWGS:
The Rail Yard Dawgs have been one of the best teams in the SPHL over the last month, as they have a 9-2-1 record in 12 games since the start of February. Their impressive month included a franchise-long eight-game winning streak that ended on February 24th against Mississippi. Over that recent 12-game stretch, Roanoke has averaged 3.83 goals per game and allowed just 2.33 goals per game. Their team took a hit, as starting goaltender and February's Warrior Player of the Month Brad Barone was loaned to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits of the ECHL. With Barone on loan, the team turns to SPHL veteran Matt Zenzola as their main goaltender. In two games since the loss of Barone, Zenzola has allowed six goals.
NOT SO SPECIAL, TEAMS:
The Mayhem will look to get their special teams back on track, as they have been struggling as of late. While they still rank in the top half of the league in power play percentage, they have converted on just five of their last 62 power play chances (8.06%). On the contrary, the Mayhem's penalty kill has been near the bottom of the league for most of the season, but they have played well over the last few games. Despite ranking 8th in the league at (80.4%), they have killed off 11 of the last 12 opposing power plays.
CRUNCH TIME:
Both the Mayhem and the Rail Yard Dawgs have just 12 games remaining in the regular season, and the two teams are battling for important playoff positions. Roanoke sits in the eighth and final playoff spot in the league with 44 points, but they are just three points ahead of the Bimingham Bulls for the last playoff spot. With the Mayhem being just 5-5-0 over their last ten, they have fallen in to fourth-place (two points behind the Huntsville Havoc). With the new SPHL playoff rules, the top three teams get to choose their first-round appointment from seeds 5-8.
BACK IN ACTION:
The Mayhem play one more game this weekend during Military Appreciation Weekend presented by Kellstrom Defense, as the Huntsville Havoc are in Macon for the second and final time this season.
