SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Devin Mantha extended his point streak to 10 games, but the RiverKings fell to the Rivermen, 4-2, behind rookie goalkeeper Mason Pulde.
Following their win on the road Wednesday against the Ice Flyers, the RiverKings returned to Planters Bank Ice at Landers Center and struggled to find momentum late in the game. Peoria opened the scoring midway through the first quarter with a goal from Cody Dion. Connor Gorman doubled the Rivermen lead with his first goal of the night only two minutes later.
The RiverKings and Shane Bennett responded almost instantaneously with a long-range shot taken just above the slot and the lead was cut to 2-1. Devin Mantha, a day removed from his birthday, added his 19th goal of the year and capped off the RiverKings retaliation scoring two goals in fifteen seconds. After the Mantha goal, Peoria's starting goaltender Peter Di Salvo was pulled in favor of rookie Mason Pulde who replaced Di Salvo on Sunday and had success against the RiverKings.
Later in the second, the RiverKings produced a handful of chances but none came to fruition. Mississippi outshot Peoria in the 2nd period 14-5 and continued that trend throughout the game. Despite the chances, Peoria would break the tied with 20 seconds remaining in the 2nd period. Joseph Widmar scored his ninth goal of the season on a rebound and the Rivermen led 3-2 headed into the 3rd period.
Hampered by a slashing call to start the third period, the RiverKings were forced to fight off another penalty just five minutes later to kill off another penalty. The third-period penalties helped slow down the RiverKings offense in the final frame. The Rivermen outshot the RiverKings 13-6 in the final period of play and secured the win through an empty-net goal by Gorman.
The RiverKings are back in action tomorrow night with a home matchup versus Peoria, the two teams final meetings of the regular season. It's another Chick-fil-a Friends and Family Four Pack night where fans can get four tickets, four hats, and four food vouchers all for only $36. To get your tickets stop by riverkings.com/chickfila.
