Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - After an unfavorable six-game road trip, the Norfolk Admirals were in need of a win on Wednesday night, and they got it with a shutout triumph over the Charlotte Checkers at Scope Arena, 3-0.
Action began quick in the contest, as less than 10 seconds in, Charlotte appeared to open the scoring. Although the goal light flashed momentarily, the play ultimately went under review and the scoreboard stayed at zero.
Despite Charlotte's pressure, it would be Norfolk who struck first. A shot from the left circle created a frenzy behind the net. Louis Leblanc chopped at a puck on the stick of the Checkers' Rasmus Rissanen, which jarred it loose towards the crease. Charlotte goaltender John Muse slid to cover the near post and swept the puck across the goal line as he closed his legs. A stroke of fortune for Leblanc made it 1-0 Admirals with Max Friberg and Nic Kerdiles assisting at 7:22 of the first period.
Neither team scored during the second period, but the Admirals extended their lead shortly into the final frame. Max Friberg screened Muse and defenseman Mat Clark ripped a shot from the right circle which again found an opening between the goaltender's legs. Matthew Pistilli and Kerdiles helped on Clark's tally at 4:38, his first of the season.
With just 2:38 remaining in regulation, the Admirals capped the game. Captain Dave Steckel rushed into the Charlotte zone and took a shot which Muse sprawled to save. Both players collided away from the net, leaving a trailing Friberg to put home an easy rebound into an empty cage and increase Norfolk's lead to 3-0. The Admirals halted a three-game slide and picked up their third win of the year over the Checkers.
Muse saved 21 of 24 shots, while Danis turned aside all 37 of the attempts he faced.
Charlotte had eight power play chances to Norfolk's three, but neither converted.
The Admirals continue their five-game homestand this weekend when they host the Springfield Falcons in a back-to-back on Friday and Saturday.
