Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - One night after the Norfolk Admirals dropped the first of a two-game series against the Binghamton Senators at home, they came back with a vengeance Saturday, trumping the visitors by a score of 3-2.

Yann Danis, who recently signed a professional tryout contract with the Admirals, stood tall in net. In the early goings of the game while on the penalty kill, Binghamton spent nearly the full two minutes in the Admirals' zone including several scoring chances, but Danis turned each shot aside.

While on a power play of their own, Norfolk scored first for the fourth time in the last six games in a dominant opening frame. Nic Kerdiles, Louis Leblanc and Antoine Laganiere combined for seven of the Admirals' 20 shots through 20 minutes, and made them count. At 11:39, Leblanc fired a shot from the slot which tipped off Kerdiles' stick on its way to beating Binghamton goaltender Andrew Hammond. Leblanc and Brendan Bell were credited with assists to give Norfolk the 1-0 lead.

Just seconds after Binghamton killed a penalty early in the second period, the Admirals couldn't catch a loose puck, which landed instead on Alex Guptill's stick. Guptill made a stretch pass to Shane Prince all alone in the slot, who buried it past Danis at 2:44 and tied the game at one.

Play settled down for the next 10 minutes, with neither team controlling play for an extended period of time, until Binghamton struck again. With a man in front screening Danis, Alex Grant snapped a shot past the Admirals' netminder at 12:36. Grant's goal was assisted by Dziurzynski and Cole Schneider.

Binghamton poured on 16 shots during the period, yet skated to the second intermission ahead by just one goal, 2-1.

Needing to even up the score, Bell answered the call and let loose a rocket from the point that Hammond failed to track through bodies in front. Assisted by captain Dave Steckel at 5:47, the defenseman's first goal of the year knotted it up at two.

Leblanc was not done with his point-getting either. Although Hammond stopped the initial backhand attempt, Leblanc followed up his rebound and beat Hammond in the paint at 12:33. Steckel and Blacker added the helpers to give Norfolk the lead, 3-2.

Despite pulling their goaltender, a late penalty on the Senators sealed the Admirals win, with Leblanc's fourth goal of the season proving to be the game-winner.

Danis stopped 37 of 39 shots in his first AHL game of the season, while Hammond saved 31 of 34. Norfolk went 1-for-3 on the power play and held Binghamton scoreless on their lone man advantage.

The Admirals' next game will be on the road when they travel to Charlotte on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. to face the Checkers for the first time since a back-to-back in the preseason.
