Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Salt Lake City, UT - The Tacoma Rainiers (54-64) scored a single run in each of the first two innings on Tuesday evening, which held up for their PCL-leading eighth shutout win this season, 2-0 over the Salt Lake Bees (55-63) in the series opener. The Rainiers are 8-1 in road trip-opening games in 2022.
Taylor Trammell belted the first pitch of the game over the right-centerfield wall, his second home run to lead off a game in two weeks (8/9 vs. Las Vegas at Cheney Stadium). It was 2-0 Tacoma in the second inning, when Mason McCoy began a two-out rally with a double to right field. McCoy scored on a lined single to right by Drew Ellis.
Rainiers right-hander Darren McCaughan was superb for six shutout innings, scattering only four hits without a walk, and he struck out seven. It was the fifth start this season where McCaughan did not walk a batter, and the 11th where he allowed four or fewer base hits.
Salt Lake starter Davis Daniel worked 5.0 IP: 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.
Lefty Matthew Boyd continued his MLB rehab assignment with a nine-pitch seventh inning for Tacoma, throwing seven strikes in a 1-2-3 frame with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts. Boyd would work around a double in the eighth, notching two more punchouts (2.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K, 23 pitches, 17 strikes).
Rainiers RHP Drew Steckenrider converted his third save in as many chances, surviving a two-out walk and ending the ballgame with a strikeout.
The two-hour, five-minute game was Tacoma's second-shortest this season by a minute (2:04, May 20 at Sacramento, also a 2-0 win).
The second game of this series will be on Wednesday, another 5:35 PT/6:35 MT first pitch at Smith's Ballpark. An all left-handed pitching matchup of Justus Sheffield (Tacoma) and Adam Seminaris (Salt Lake) is on deck.
Rainiers broadcaster Mike Curto will have full coverage on TacomaRainiers.com. All 2022 Rainiers games, home and away, can also be heard for free on the MiLB First Pitch app. HD video broadcasts of every game can be viewed with a MiLB.TV subscription.
