D-Fenders Mount Late Comeback to Beat Bighorns
January 3, 2014 - NBA G League (G League)
Los Angeles D-Fenders News Release
RENO, NV - The Los Angeles D-Fenders defeated the Reno Bighorns 99-95 at the Reno Events Center tonight.
Josh Magette got the D-Fenders (6-7) off to a fast start with two steals which lead to an early five-point advantage in the first period. The lead would not last long, as the Bighorns (7-8) worked their way back into a four-point edge entering the second quarter. The second frame was closely contested throughout, but both teams struggled to gain consistency and Reno exited the half leading 51-45. In total, the D-Fenders shot 36.6 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from the three-point line in the half.
Los Angeles' struggles continued in the third quarter as they missed 16 of their 23 shot attempts and allowed 12 points in the paint to Reno. However, the Bighorns struggled as well and clung to a five-point lead entering the final quarter. Despite their inefficient first 36 minutes, the D-Fenders bounced back in the fourth period and mounted a 21-4 run to gain their first lead since the two-minute mark in the opening frame. Manny Harris proved to be the catalyst with 16 fourth quarter points, on six of 11 from the field, to help Los Angeles earn their sixth victory of the season and third win on the four-game road trip.
The D-Fenders were led by Manny Harris (31 points, 10 rebounds, four steals), Josh Magette (17 points), C. J. Williams (16 points) and Jamario Moon (14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks). James Southerland rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points and nine rebounds off of the bench.
Mo Charlo (23 points, 17 rebounds) and Trent Lockett (13 points, 10 rebounds) both finished with double-doubles for Reno. The Bighorns were also helped by Tajuan Porter (14 points, seven assists) and Bryan Davis (10 points) off of the bench.
Overall, the D-Fenders gave up 23 offensive rebounds and 50 points in the paint to the Bighorns. However, the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the game. Los Angeles held the edge in points (33-24), field goal percentage (55.0-33.3), rebounds (13-11), points in the paint (12-6), and second chance points (9-6) in the final 12 minutes of play.
The D-Fenders will return home to face the Bakersfield Jam on January 4th, at the Toyota Sports Center, at 6:30pm.
