Cleveland Charge News Release
The Canton Charge were defeated by the Bakersfield Jam, 112-104, at the Dignity Health Events Center on Thursday night. The loss drops the Charge to 9-5 on the season, while the Jam evened their mark at 8-8.
Canton ran out to a 28-23 first quarter lead behind Gilbert Brown's 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. The Charge assisted 10 of their 12 first quarter field goals on 20 attempts (60%) from the floor.
The Charge used a 9-4 run to start the second to knot the game up at 32-32, but Bakersfield immediately put up a 12-2 run of their own over the next 3:33 to go ahead 44-34. The Jam outscored Canton 32-19 in the second quarter and were in control at the intermission with a 55-47 lead.
The Jam fended off the Charge throughout the entire second half, never relinquishing their lead and earning 28 trips to the free-throw line, hitting 21. Canton got it to within one basket on three separate occasions, but Bakersfield responded with a bucket of their own on the ensuing possession each time back down.
Brown led all scorers with 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting with six rebounds, five assists and three steals in 40 minutes. Jorge Gutierrez posted his fifth-career double-double with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting with nine rebounds, a career-high 13 assists and four steals in 35 minutes. Shane Edwards tallied 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting with six rebounds in 32 minutes. Canton set a new franchise record for steals in a game with 15.
All five Jam starters totaled double-digit scoring, led by Jared Cunningham's 22 that included 12-of-13 from the free-throw line and four steals in 33 minutes. Brian Butch posted 21 points with 11-of-13 from the free throw line, 14 rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes. As a team, Bakersfield hit 31-of-42 foul shots (74%), while Canton was 15-of-19 (79%).
