EL SEGUNDO - The D-Fenders beat the Oklahoma City Blue 99-90 tonight in El Segundo.
Vander Blue paced the D-Fenders (15-14) with 31 points and seven rebounds, his 10th consecutive 20-point outing. Tarik Black tallied a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Ryan Gomes reached the 20-point plateau with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Lazar Hayward scored nine points in his debut for the D-Fenders, while Josh Magette dished out 10 assists.
JP Tokoto (19 points) led the Blue (10-20). Marquis Teague (17 points), Dez Wells (15 points) and Tomislav Zubcic (11 points, 14 rebounds) all reached double-figures for Oklahoma City.
The first quarter was neck-and-neck, with the Blue leading 31-28 after one. Vander Blue had eight points in the frame for Los Angeles. The D-Fenders held the Blue to an opponent season-low 13 points in the second quarter, outscoring Oklahoma City 24-13 in the period. At the half, Los Angeles led 52-44 behind 16 points from Vander Blue and 12 from Gomes.
The defensive intensity continued in the third quarter for Los Angeles, who outscored Oklahoma City 27-19 in the quarter, led by Vander Blue's nine points. The Blue fought back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the D-Fenders 27-20, but it was not enough to complete the comeback, as the D-Fenders held on to win 99-90.
The D-Fenders shot .400 from the field, compared to .410 for the Blue. Los Angeles edged Oklahoma City in assists (22-15) and steals (13-7), forcing 22 Blue turnovers.
Los Angeles hosts the Oklahoma City Blue again on Thursday, February 4th at 7:30pm PT in El Segundo.
