D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, VA (January 27, 2004) â A new soccer era in the Nation's Capital will dawn this spring, as D.C. United today announced dates and match-ups comprising the club's 2004 Major League Soccer schedule. As announced last month, the Black-and-Red will open the season by hosting the defending MLS Cup Champion San Jose Earthquakes, Saturday, April 3rd at RFK Stadium. The game marks the debut of new United Head Coach Peter Nowak and teen phenomenon Freddy Adu and will kick-off at 4:00 p.m. ET to a national television audience on ABC.
"We and our fans are eagerly anticipating the 2004 season," said United President and CEO Kevin Payne. "After setting the standard for sports teams in the capital area in our first four seasons, we slipped a bit the last few years. Every person with D.C. United, starting with me, has committed themselves to re-establishing the standard of excellence people associate with D.C. United. This is going to be a great year for our organization, our players and our supporters."
Full season, half season and flex ticket plans are now on sale through the D.C. United office at 703-478-6600. Individual match tickets to the April 3rd home opener will go on sale March 1, 2004. Prices range from $16 for Spectator level (endline) seating through $36 for Mezzanine level seating. Group pricing (minimum of 20 tickets) ranges from $13 (Spectator) to $28 (Mezzanine). Individual match tickets will be available through all TicketMaster outlets, via www.dcunited.com, via www.ticketmaster.com, via TicketMaster Phone Charge and at the RFK Stadium box office. Group tickets are also available through the D.C. United office.
United will travel to the Home Depot Center on April 10th to take on the Los Angeles Galaxy, then venture to Giants Stadium to open Atlantic Cup competition against the MetroStars the following week. Nowak faces his former club, the Chicago Fire, for the first time on April 24th at RFK Stadium. The Black-and-Red will close the 29-week regular season campaign at home against the MetroStars on Saturday, October 16th. The teams will also square off in a July 3rd holiday showdown at RFK Stadium. D.C. United's 2004 MLS campaign features 28 Saturday games and two weekday home matches: against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday, May 19th and against the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday, August 11th.
D.C. United's 30-game MLS schedule includes four games (two home, two away) against each Eastern Conference opponent â Chicago, Columbus, MetroStars, New England â as well as home and road match-ups against clubs from the Western Conference. The remaining four games (two home, two away) were determined by competitive seeding against non-Conference opponents based on 2003 regular season matches. The 30-week MLS season allows for mid-week U.S. Open Cup match dates as well as the possibility of international exhibition games.
