Cyclones Skid Hits Six, Fall 3-2 in Extras

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (August 16, 2015) - Andrew Church was dominant over his 6.2 innings on the mound scattering just two hits and allowing one unearned run, but the Cyclones bullpen surrendered the lead as Hudson Valley rallied for a 3-2 win in 11 innings. The loss was Brooklyn's franchise record seventh straight home defeat, and sixth straight overall. The Cyclones went 1-for-12 with RISP and struck out a season-high 17 times. With the loss, Brooklyn drops to 25-30 and heads in the NYPL All-Star Break in last place in the McNamara Division.

Church began the contest strong and composed, throwing a quick 1-2-3 inning. Brooklyn bats followed with a promising offensive opportunity. After Branden Kaupe was sent walking and Tucker Tharp singled, Jeff Diehl was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Cyclones. However, Brooklyn was unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunity, as David Thompson and Brandon Brosher both struck out looking. With this pair of strikeouts, the 'Clones have now struck out 22 times out of 44 at-bats with the bases loaded.

Brooklyn was able to get numbers the board in the second. After Jose Garcia was hit by a pitch, Zach Mathieu sent a line drive double to left field and Enmanuel Zabala singled to bring Garcia home. With runners at the corners and no outs, a ground out by Alfredo Reyes scored Mathieu, giving the Cyclones an early 2-0 lead.

The Renegades were unable to counter the two-run deficit until the seventh. After Hudson Valley's slugger Michael Russell began the seventh hitting a leadoff double off Church, a ground out pushed the shortstop to third with two outs. Right-hander Craig Missigman then came in from the stretch to relieve Church after 6.2 innings of work where he allowed just two hits. Missigman would walk his first batter and Russell then scored on a passed ball by Garcia, notching an unearned run charged to Church. After another walk, the Renegades' first baseman Matt Dacey was caught stealing third base and the Cyclones ended the seventh with a 2-1 lead.

Right-hander Corey Taylor took over the mound for Brooklyn in the eighth, throwing a quick scoreless inning and Brooklyn then brought in closer Alex Palsha. After leadoff single and a stolen base put Hudson Valley's tying run in scoring position, a triple by Russell scored one for the Renegades. It was Palsha's first blown save of the season and eliminated the Cyclones' lead with no outs in the top of the ninth. Hudson Valley's Joe McCarthy then followed by reaching on a catcher's interference by Garcia and stealing second. After a ground out, an intentional walk loaded the bases for the Renegades with one out. But Palsha got out of the jam and struck out the next two batters, ending the threat and the inning tied at 2-2.

Coming into the bottom of the ninth, it was crunch time for Cyclones offense. But Brooklyn was again unable to capitalize. Although Vinny Siena came in as a defensive replacement for Kaupe with Zabala on second, the second baseman struck out swinging, sending the game into extras. Southpaw Carlos Valdez took over for the tenth and kept the Renegades scoreless.

With Nicco Blank (0-3) on the hill for Brooklyn, Russell reached on a fielding error by Thompson that put him at second. A ground out sent Russell to third and Blank hit Hudson Valley's Hector Montes with a pitch to put runners at the corners. Dacey then stepped up to hit a double that scored one for the Renegades, giving way to a 3-2 win.

The Boys of Summer will enjoy a two-day All-Star break, with the exception of Siena, Palsha, and right-hander Gaby Almonte, who will venture down to Aberdeen for the All-Star game Tuesday night. The Cyclones will then return to action Wednesday night, taking on the Lowell Spinners at home as righty Tyler Badamo (2-6) takes the mound for Brooklyn. The WWE Superstars and Divas will be making an appearance at MCU Park to celebrate the upcoming SummerSlam, and a Greg Kelly and Rosanna Scotto Bobblehead will be presented courtesy of the Municipal Credit Union.
