Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - As the day went on it appeared the Lowell Spinners ran out of gas, as just a Chad De La Guerra single with two-out in the sixth kept Tri-City from no-hitting the Spinners en route to handing Lowell a 2-0 loss in Sunday's regularly scheduled game at LeLacheur Park.
The loss drops the Spinners a half-game back of the ValleyCats in the Stedler Division race as the league enters the All-Star Break.
After the half hour break between games, Tri-City (30-25) came out swinging in the top half of the first. Johnny Sewald led the game off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Aaron Mizell followed with a single and stole second to give the ValleyCats a pair of runners in scoring position. A Bobby Wernes single plated Sewald and a two-out single by Kolbey Carpenter staked the ValleyCats to a 2-0 lead.
Lowell (30-26) appeared in prime position to score in the bottom half of the inning after back-to-back walks by Luis Alexander Basabe and Sean Coyle led off the inning. However a popout and double play quickly ended what would be the Spinners best threat of the afternoon.
The score remained that way with the Spinners held completely at bay. One batter after Keach Ballard robbed Andrew Benintendi with a leaping grab at shortstop to preserve the Tri-City no-hitter, De La Guerra singled through the hole at second for the lone hit of the game for the Spinners, who would go quietly in the seventh.
Almonte (2-3, 4.13) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk in 4.2 innings. He struck out six. Logan Boyd gave the Spinners a chance at the comeback with 2.1 scoreless, striking out a pair.
The Spinners now head into the All-Star Break, with the coaching staff and Victor Acosta, Basabe, De La Guerra and Josh Ockimey headed to Aberdeen. They return to action Wednesday in Brooklyn for a pair of games with the Cyclones. Kevin Steen and Javier Rodriguez will get the starts in Brooklyn.
