Vermont Rally Falls Short 10-8 At Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, NY --- The Yankees snapped a 4-4 tie with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and then held off a late Vermont rally as Staten Island completed the two-game series sweep of the Monsters with a 10-8 New York-Penn League victory Sunday evening at Richmond County Ballpark.

Eduardo de Oleo gave Staten Island a 5-4 lead with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth off Vermont starter Dustin Driver (1-4), who did not retire any of the four batters he faced in the inning a hit batter, walk and Thairo Estrada RBI single gave the Yankees a two-run lead and knocked Driver out of the game. Reliever Tyler Painton loaded the bases with a walk before Trey Amburgery lined a two-run single and Brandon Wagner RBI groundout gave Staten Island a 9-4 lead.

Vermont cut into the deficit in the seventh inning on a Trace Loehr two-out, two-run, but the Yankees got an unearned run in bottom of eighth on a Amburgrey sacrifice fly for 10-6 Yankee advantage. With two on and two out in the ninth, the Lake Monsters cut the deficit in half on a Seth Brown RBI single and Chris RBI double, but Travis Hissong struckout Seong-min Kim to end the game with the tying run on second base.

Staten Island had jumped out to an early 4-1 lead with three runs in the second on a Wagner leadoff homer and Zack Zehner two-out, two-run triple, but the Lake Monsters were able to tie the game 4-4 with a Kim RBI triple and Brett Siddall sacrifice fly in the third before a Richie Martin RBI single in the fourth.

The Lake Monsters finished with a season-high 16 hits, but eight of the hits came with two outs as Vermont also left a season-high 15 runners on base ... Seven different Lake Monsters had a multi-hit game, including Brown with three hits (the first Vermont player with a three-hit game since July 30th). Siddall was 2-for-2 with two walks, a run, double and RBI, while Loehr was 2-for-5 and Jordan Devencenzi 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Five of the Yankees eight hits went for extra bases, including the two solo home runs and two doubles. Wagner and de Oleo each had two hits for Staten Island (28-26), while Jeff Hendrix scored three runs and Estrada scored twice. Jose Mesa Jr. (3-0) struckout four over two innings of relief to earn the win for the Yankees, who lead the McNamara Division by 1 1/2 games over Aberdeen heading into the All-Star Break.

Vermont (25-30) will be off the next two days as Lake Monsters outfielder Brown and catcher Nick Collins head to Aberdeen for the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday. The Lake Monsters return to action when they host the Stedler Division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats at historic Centennial Field on Wednesday and Thursday. The final McKenzies 25-cent "Hot Dog Heaven" will take place throughout the game on Wednesday, while the first 1,000 fans to Thursday's game will receive a free Lake Monsters cap courtesy of the Northeast Delta Dental.
