Yanks Secure 1st Place Heading into All-Star Break with 10-8 Win

The Staten Island Yankees (28-26) finished the first half by defeating the Vermont Lake Monsters (25-30) by a score of 10-8.

The Yankees got on the board immediately in the first inning. Jeff Hendrix led off the inning with a double, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored when Thairo Estrada grounded out to second base.

Vermont knotted things up at one in the second inning. Brett Siddall hit a ground-rule double, Steven Pallares singled him over to third, and Jesus Lopez drove Siddall in with a groundout.

Brandon Wagner hit his fourth homer of the season in the bottom of the second to help the Yankees regain the lead. Drew Bridges reached on an error and after Hendrix drew a walk, Zach Zehner drove both home with a two-RBI triple.

The Lake Monsters pulled within one run in the top of the third inning. Chris Iriart drew a one-out walk and scored when Seong-min Kim hit a triple to left field. Siddall hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home the Lake Monsters third run.

The game would be tied up once again in the top of the fourth inning. Trace Loehr singled, stole second base and scored on a Richie Martin single.

The Yankees would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Eduardo de Oleo hit his second homer of the season to lead off the inning. Hendrix was hit by a bit and stole his ninth base of the season. After Zehner walked, Estrada brought home Hendrix with an RBI single. After the Lake Monsters walked the bases loaded, Trey Amburgey brought home two more runs with a single to right field. Kevin Cornelius scored the fifth and final run of the inning on a fielder's choice.

Vermont scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Loehr brought home both Pallares and Jordan Devencenzi with a single to centerfield.

Thairo Estrada led off the eighth inning with a walk, advanced to third on a wild pick-off attempt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amburgey.

The Lake Monsters didn't go quietly in the ninth inning. Devencenzi reached on a single, advanced to second when Martin was hit by a pitch, and scored on Seth Brown's single to left field. Iriart doubled to left field to score martin and put the tying runs in scoring position. However, Kim struck out to end the ball game.

Jeff Degano lasted only 2.1 innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs, one walk, and struck out two. Yoel Espinal relieved him and went 0.2 innings, issuing two hits, two runs and a walk. Jose Mesa (W, 3-0) picked up the win in relief. He pitched two scoreless innings striking out four. Will Carter also gave up two earned runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Michael Schaub pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. Travis Hissong (S, 1) held on to pick up his first save of the season. He gave up two earned runs in a turbulent ninth inning.

The Yankees will now have a few days off for the New York-Penn League AllStar game. They will start the second half of the season on Aug. 19 in Aberdeen.
