Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (26-27) ended their four game losing streak as they beat the Aberdeen IronBirds (27-28) by a score of 6-2.
With Connecticut leading 2-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh the Tigers were able to create some separation against Aberdeen reliever Ryan Meisinger. With one out Josh Lester and Keaton Jones singled and both would score. Lester scored on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of leftfielder Victor Padron and it was Jones scoring on a single by designated hitter Cam Gibson making it 4-1.
The Tigers scored two more runs in eighth inning after Aberdeen scored one in the top half of the inning. With Garret Cleavinger on the mound second basemen Pat Mackenzie reached on an error to start the inning and scored on a RBI double by Will Allen (1-3, 2B, RBI). Two batters later Tanner Donnels (2-4, 2 RBI) doubled in Allen to push the score to 6-2.
Connecticut got off to a quick start scoring two runs in the first to lead 2-0 and Aberdeen scored a run in the second with two outs to trail just 2-1. Tyler Alexander started for the Tigers and pitched very well. The only blemish was when he allowed a triple to right fielder Oswill Lartguez and a base hit to second basemen Drew Turbin with two outs in the second.
Alexander finished the game working three innings and allowed just two hits and the one run while striking out three. Trent Szkutnik (1-0) picked up the win in relief tossing four shutout innings and gave up just one hit. Szkutnik struck out five and retired the first 11 batters he faced.
Lazaro Leyva (0-2) took the lose for Aberdeen giving up two runs in three innings on three hits. He struck out two and walked two. The run allowed by Cleavinger in the eighth was the first earned run he allowed all year.
Victor Padron (0-4, RBI, BB, R) went hitless ending his ten game hitting streak. He will be starting the All-Star game on Tuesday in Aberdeen.
Connecticut will have two days off for the All-Star break and resume play on Wednesday with a two game series at Hudson Valley. Game time on Wednesday is at 7:05 p.m.
