Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Brooklyn, NY (8/16/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones by a score of 3-2 in 11 innings on Sunday evening at MCU Park. With the victory, the Renegades saw their record improve to 27-28 while Brooklyn fell to 25-30.
Brooklyn scored a pair of runs off Renegades starting pitcher Travis Ott in the bottom of the second inning as after catcher Jose Garcia was hit by a pitch and first baseman Zach Mathieu doubled, center fielder Enmanuel Zabala brought home Garcia on a RBI single. Mathieu scored when shortstop Alfredo Reyes grounded into a double play, giving Brooklyn a 2-0 lead.
Ott lasted two and two-thirds innings as he allowed two runs off three hits and struck out four batters. But the bullpen was strong after that as over eight and a third innings, they combined to give up just three hits and struck out 13 batters.
The Renegades cut the Cyclones lead to 2-1 in the top of the seventh inning as shortstop Michael Russell led off the frame with a double and came around to score later in the inning on passed ball.
Hudson Valley tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the ninth inning when second baseman Jake Cronenworth, who singled to lead off the inning, came around to score on a RBI triple by Russell. That was the first run that Brooklyn relief pitcher Alex Palsha gave up all season, as he appeared in 17 straight games before Sunday without giving up a run.
Renegades relief pitcher Justin McCalvin (2-1) set down Brooklyn in the bottom of the ninth and tenth inning to send the game to the top of the 11th inning tied at 2-2. Russell reached on an error to lead off the 11th inning and scored on first baseman Matt Dacey's RBI double, giving Hudson Valley a 3-2 lead. McCalvin struck out two of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the 11th inning to earn the win as he struck out six batters in three total innings of work.
Nicco Blank (0-3) took the loss for Brooklyn as he allowed one run in an inning of relief work.
Notes: This is the third time that Hudson Valley has defeated Brooklyn in extra-innings in the 2015 season and the first time winning in extras on the road against the Cyclones. The prior two wins came at Dutchess Stadium as the Renegades beat Brooklyn 6-5 in 12 innings on July 10th and 4-3 in 10 innings on July 28th. Overall, Hudson Valley is a perfect 6-0 in extra inning games in 2015.
