Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
ORLANDO, Florida - Barry Almeida scored twice while Taylor Aronson and Josh Birkholz each notched a pair of points as the Cincinnati Cyclones (36-21-2-4) throttled the Orlando Solar Bears (38-22-2-2) by a 5-1 final score in front of 6,601 at Amway Center on Wednesday night.
The Cyclones raced out to a 2-0 advantage just four minutes into the contest as Barry Almeida and Matt Tinordi each lit the lamp just 59 seconds apart. For Tindordi, his goal was the first in his professional career, beating Maxime Clermont (L, 22 saves, 7-10-0-1). At the other end of the ice, Rob Madore (W, 28 saves, 16-11-0) wasn't nearly as busy but turned aside five shots in the first period and helped his team carry the two-goal cushion after one.
Cincinnati padded its lead in a big way during the middle period, potting three more goals. First, during a Cyclones power play, Josh Birkholz sped his way past the Orlando defense and backhanded home his 12th of the season. The penalty kill unit contributed later in the frame when Byron Froese stole a loose puck and broke in on Clermont; despite heavy pressure on his back, the Chicago Blackhawks prospect slid home a shorthanded strike at 12:35, extending the Cincinnati lead to 4-0. But they weren't done; Almeida buried a rebound for his second goal of the night at 14:10, giving the visiting Cyclones a commanding 5-0 cushion through 40 minutes.
The Solar Bears finally stopped the bleeding at 7:08 of the final period, when Mickey Lang blasted a power play goal by Madore to make it a 5-1 game. But that would be the last of Orlando's offense as, with a hefty lead, the Cyclones were able to salt away the remaining minutes and capture a 5-1 win. It was the 19th time this season the Ben Simon's team reached the five-goal plateau.
Cincinnati will continue their Sunshine State road trip by visiting the Florida Everblades this Friday night at 7:30pm. Fans can hear all the action on the Cyclones Radio Network (CyclonesHockey.com, America One, Cyclones Mobile App) beginning at 7:00pm.
