Cyclones Jump Charlotte Checkers, 4-1

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Cyclones had a five minute, thirty second offensive explosion to collect a 4-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers on Wednesday night. Three of the goals for the Cyclones came in the opening half of the first period of play. Robert Mayer stopped 24 shots to collect his eleventh victory of the season.

With the victory, the Cyclones take over sole possession of the North Division lead with 53 standings points. Kalamazoo sits second with 51, Toledo is third with 50 and Wheeling is last with 49. Cincinnati won for just the fourth time in its last ten tries at U.S. Bank Arena dating back to December 13.

Cincinnati raced out to a 3-1 first period lead. Rookie Chris Morehouse gave the Cyclones a 1-0 edge 3:42 into the contest with his third goal of the campaign. It was the 26th time this year- an ECHL-high- that Cincinnati has scored the opening goal of the game. Less than five minutes later- at 8:00- rookie All-Star Matt Pierce netted his 23rd score of the season from Dwayne Zinger and Brett Motherwell. The 23 goals are the most by any first-year player in the league. A bit more than a minute after that, Scott Reynolds notched his 16th goal of the campaign ay 9:12 with an assist from Barret Ehgoetz. For Reynolds, it was his 100th point with the Cincinnati club. Charlotte would pull goaltender Ryan Munce at that point- after allowing three goals on eight shots. The Checkers would use the time to regroup and get a wraparound goal from David Marshall at 9:41for his ninth lamplighter of the year and narrow the deficit. Cincinnati won the shots battle, 15-9.

The three first period goal marked the tenth time this season and fifth time in January, that the club scored a trio in a period of play. Cincinnati won eight of the previous nine games that this had occurred in.

There was no scoringin the second period. Charlotte had the best chance of the frame when Jean-Phillipp Chabot had a breakaway chance with less than two minutes to go that was steered away by Cincinnati goaltender Robert Mayer. The shots again went the way of the Cyclones, 10-8.

The Cyclones scored again in the third period when Barret Ehgoetz re-directed a Scott Reynolds pass for his 17th goal at 4:27. Ian McKenzie had the other helper on the tally, which closed out the scoring in the contest. The shots were even at eight each in the third period and the Cyclones won the shots battle, 33-25.

Prior to the game, Cincinnati lost defenseman Jason Jozsa- who was recalled by Milwaukee (AHL) for the third time this season. The Cyclones have had ten players called up this season and it has cost the club 123 man-games.

Cincinnati is 26-16-1, while Charlotte is 22-14-5. The Cyclones play Friday (Jan. 29) against defending Kelly Cup champion South Carolina on 'Willie Cunningham Bobblehead Night'. Game time is at 7:30pm.
