Curve Take Game One vs New Britain, 4-1
June 1, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
New Britain, CT - Righty Jared Hughes was able to bounce back after two recent rocky starts and fire seven solid innings for his league best eighth win of the season as the Altoona Curve defeated the hapless New Britain Rock Cats (AA - Minnesota Twins) on Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium.
The Rock Cats would jump on Hughes early in the first inning when Rene Tosoni's RBI groundout plated Ben Revere providing them with a 1-0 edge.
Hughes would settle down, tossing six subsequent shutout frames and become the first Eastern League player to record eight wins on the season. Over the seven innings, Hughes would scatter just five hits and strike out six batters.
Offensively the Curve were held silent through the first four innings by New Britain starter David Bromberg.
Altoona tied the game in the top of the fifth when Gorkys Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Kris Watts to knot the score, 1-1.
Chase d'Arnaud, who finished the game 2-for-4 drove in the decisive run with a double down the left field line, scoring Alex Presley and gave the Altoona (34-18) a 2-1 lead which they would not relinquish.
After Hughes' seven innings, RHP Jeff Sues tossed a 1-2-3 eighth in his first action since May 8. Sues was recently activated from the Disabled List following a 17-day inactive stint with a left intercostals strain.
The Curve would use a pair of errors by Rock Cats third baseman Yangervis Solarte to aid in their pairing of two insurance runs to extend their lead to 4-1.
Daniel Moskos tossed a perfect ninth, striking the side for his 12th save of the season which is tied for most in the Eastern League.
The Curve will look for another series win on Wednesday morning at 10:35 a.m. They'll send LHP Justin Wilson (2-3, 2.80) to the mound while New Britain (14-37) will counter with RHP Carlos Gutierrez (2-3, 3.65). Airtime on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Curve Radio Network affiliates is 10:05 a.m.
