AKRON, OH - The Akron Aeros (AA-Cleveland Indians) got their first full taste of Pirates No.1 prospect Pedro Alvarez Saturday night as the slugging third baseman jacked his sixth Double-A home run of the season in a 2-for-4 night leading the Curve to a 9-3 win at Canal Park.
Akron put up three runs in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run by C Carlos Santana. Afterwards it was all Altoona as starter Kyle Bloom (4-5) would hold the Aeros to just two hits in his final four innings of a five inning start to earn him his fourth win of the season.
After going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranding 10 runners last night against Akron the Curve went 3-for-7 (.429) Saturday with runners in scoring position including Alvarez's go-ahead two run shot coming off Akron starter Josh Tomlin (9-8) with two outs in the fifth inning.
Pirates No. 3 prospect Jose Tabata had his second three hit night in a row going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored raising his season batting average over the .300 mark to .306.
Curve SS Brian Friday also had a strong offensive night connecting for two doubles and three RBIs in a 2-for-5 night. Friday picked up all three RBIs in a five run eighth inning that secured the win for the Curve.
Altoona (39-62) hopes to take their first series from the Aeros (61-40) with a win Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. at Canal Park. Curve right hander Yoslan Herrera (6-0, 3.34) will try to remain unbeaten in 2009 in his 12th start of season while Akron counters with southpaw Bobby Livingston (7-5, 4.73). Radio coverage for the series finale will begin at 1:20 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Altoona Curve Radio Network.
