Darin Mastroianni sets franchise record with 4 outfield assists, three Sea Dogs gunned down at home

Portland, ME- Adam Calderone and Scott Campbell delivered RBI doubles, but the Portland Sea Dogs rallied for a 4-3 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats before 7,368 Saturday night at Hadlock Field.

Portland (48-51) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against New Hampshire starter Kenny Rodriguez. Jorge Jimenez walked, John Otness was hit by a pitch and Lars Anderson (2-for-4, R, RBI) ripped a two-out double to put the Sea Dogs in front. Otness was thrown out at the plate on the play, the first of four outfield assists in the game for Fisher Cats CF Darin Mastroianni.

In the bottom of the second inning, Jon Still (1-for-2, 2 RBI) walked and was balked to second. Still was gunned down at the plate by Mastroianni trying to score on a single by Matt Sheely with two outs.

New Hampshire (46-54) moved in front in the top of the third inning. Nick Gorneault led off with a walk and he scored on a double by Calderone (2-for-4, R, RBI) to tie the game at 1-1. After Brian Jeroloman walked, Jonathan Diaz moved the runners up with a bunt. Calderone then came home on a ground out by Luis Sanchez.

The Fisher Cats added a run in the top of the fifth inning. Mastroianni singled and stole second and scored on a double by Scott Campbell to make it 3-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ryan Khoury led off with a double and scored on a single by Sheely to make it 3-2. New Hampshire failed to get Khoury on a throw to the plate, allowing Sheely to move up. When catcher Jeroloman's throw back to second went into centerfield, Sheely tried for third only to be thrown out by Mastroianni, his third outfield assist of the game.

Kenny Rodriguez worked four innings for the Fisher Cats, allowing two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out one. He was followed to the mound by Edgar Estanga. The Sea Dogs took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning against Estanga (3-4). Jimenez walked, Anderson reached on an infield single and Still drilled a two-run single to put the Sea Dogs up 4-3. The next batter, Yamaico Navarro doubled and Still was gunned down at the plate, a play started by Mastroianni who picked up his fourth assist.

Ryne Lawson (2-8) earned the win for Portland, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out four. Andrew Dobies worked two perfect innings in relief.

In the top of the ninth inning, Jeroloman and Sanchez reached on singles, but Bryce Cox got Mastroianni to fly to center field to earn the game as he earned his eighth save.

The rubber-game of the series between the Fisher Cats and Sea Dogs will be played Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm with right-hander Rey Gonzalez (4-5, 2.83) starting for New Hampshire against Portland right-hander Adam Mills (7-5, 4.78). The Fisher Cats open a four-game series at Merchantsauto.com Stadium against the New Britain Rock Cats on Monday night at 7:05pm.
