Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE/AKRON SERIES: The Altoona Curve and Akron Aeros will lock horns for the 19th time of their 24 scheduled meetings. The Curve and Aeros are each other's second most common opponent (the Curve play the Erie SeaWolves 25 times in 2009 with the Eastern League's unbalanced scheduling). Akron has won 14/19 meetings so far and all time have a very impressive mark in games played at Canal Park, going 67-42 against the Curve.
LAST TIME OUT: The Curve stranded 10 base runners and Aeros All- Star catcher Carlos Santana belted a solo home run in the sixth to give Akron a 2-1 win in the series opener. It was Curve lefty Daniel Moskos' first loss in his last four starts despite tossing 6.0 strong innings.
FOR ALTOONA: LHP Kyle Bloom will make his 15th start of the season tonight for the Altoona Curve. In his last start on 7/20 Bloom threw 6.0 innings and allowed just two runs on four his in an 8-2 Curve win over Reading. Bloom makes his third start against the Aeros this season. In his previous two outings Bloom is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA. The southpaw was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the Major League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft in December 2008 and spent the 2009 spring training season with the Tigers, but failed to make the club's 25-man roster and was returned to the Pittsburgh chain. Bloom was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the fifth round of the 2004 June draft.
FOR AKRON: RHP Josh Tomlin makes his 18th start (19th appearance) tonight for the Aeros. Tomlin is coming off of two consecutive losses the Erie SeaWolves on 7/13 and 7/20. The 34 year-old Texas native allowed 12 runs in 10.2 innings in the losses. This will be his second start against the Curve this season. On 4/23 Tomlin picked up his second win of the season after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits and matching his season high eight strikeout against Altoona.
YES WAY, JOSE: Pirates No. 3 prospect OF Jose Tabata continues his offensive tear after going 3-for-4 with a double Friday against the Aeros. Tabata is now batting .299 to lead the Curve and is hitting .360 in July including a career high 13-game hitting streak from 7/5-7/19.
RAY OF SUNSHINE: Last night's loss was the fifth one run loss the Curve have endured to the Akron Aeros. The Curve have rebounded well though going 3-1 following the close losses.
POST ALL-STAR PROGRESS: After the Eastern League All-Star break the Curve are outscoring opponents by 11 runs (44-33) in nine games after being outscored by 106 in the first half of the season.
