Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- Saturday night's game at Dodd Stadium saw the largest crowd of the 2009 season show up to pay tribute to the brave men and women that protect our country. Connecticut and New Britain honored them all with a rollercoaster ride of emotional highs and lows in a pitcher's duel that came to an end in the 13th inning with the Defenders walking to the tune of a 1-0 victory.
With one out and runners in scoring position in the bottom of the thirteenth inning, RF-Mike Mooney hit a soft dribbler back to the pitcher and DH-Eddy Martinez-Esteve came into score the game winning run as RHP-Kyle Waldrop bobbled the flip to his catcher Jeff Christy.
At the beginning , game two saw two righties in Daryl Maday for Connecticut and Mike McCardell for New Britain pitch lights out, each tossing seven scoreless innings allowing just four hits before watching their bullpens take over and deliver the same.
The combination of Maday, Snyder and Joaquin limited the Rock Cats to just two runners all game into scoring position. For Connecticut they saw two opportunities slip away in the ninth and tenth but forged ahead in the thirteenth taking advantage of the Rock Cats miscue.
RHP-Waldis Joaquin (4-5) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief and allowed just one run. Rock Cats reliever Kyle Waldrop (1-2) suffered the loss allowing the unearned run off of three hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Connecticut will seek out the series sweep tomorrow as they send veteran righty Garrett Broshuis (2-1) to the hill to face New Britain's RHP-Frank Mata (1-3) at 1:05pm at Dodd Stadium.
