July 12, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE/BOWIE SERIES: The Altoona Curve and the Bowie Baysox (AA-Baltimore Orioles) will play the third game of a four game series tonight at Prince George's Stadium. This will be the 16th meeting between the two clubs this season with the Baysox holding a 9-6 advantage thus far.
LAST TIME OUT: The Altoona Curve won a 5-4 contest over Bowie Saturday night. The Curve rallied from a 4-1 deficit with a four-run fourth inning. Miles Durham went 3-for-4 with an RBI double while Jason Delaney and Steve Lerud each doubled in 2-for-4 performances. Daniel Moskos picked up his sixth win of the season and his second straight against the Baysox.
FOR ALTOONA: RHP Tyler Herron will make his fourth start of the season tonight for the Altoona Curve. The former St. Louis Cardinals' supplementary first round draft choice in 2005 out of Wellington H.S. (the same high school that produced former Pirates' first-rounders and Curve hurlers Bobby Bradley and Sean Burnett) was signed by the Pirates as a minor league free agent on 6/12 and has tossed 10.2 innings of scoreless relief in four relief appearances. As a starter Herron is 0-2 with a 7.43 ERA. In his last start Herron had a rough go of it lasting just 2.2 innings allowing five runs on four hits in a loss to Erie on 7/7. This will be his second start against the Baysox this season. Herron made his first start of year against Bowie on 6/27 where he took the loss after tossing 5.0 innings and giving up five runs on nine hits.
FOR BOWIE: RHP Brandon Erbe gets the start for the Baysox tonight. This will be Erbe's first Double-A start since 4/29 after spending nearly two months on the Disabled List with shoulder fatigue. Erbe is coming off of four rehab appearances with Aberdeen IronBirds of the New York-Penn League where he went 0-1 with a 4.61 ERA. Erbe was the Orioles third round draft selection in 2005 out of McDonogh High School.
QUICKSAND: Saturday marked just the seventh time this season that the Curve have been victorious after their opponent got on the board first. The Curve are now 7-38 when the other team gets an early lead. 400 CLUB: Jason Delaney and Miles Durham have been torching opposing pitchers lately. Both 1B/OF are hitting .400 over their last five games combining to hit 14-for-35 with five RBIs and five runs scored.
PEDRO IN ST. LOUIS: Pirates' No. 1 prospect Pedro Alvarez left Friday night for St. Louis to participate in the Futures Game at Busch Stadium. The game will be played on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. E.T. and be televised nationally on ESPN 2. Former Curve hurler Brad Lincoln is also on the roster for Team USA.
CHANG BANGS: Infielder Ray Chang has been a pleasant surprise for Altoona. After being called up from Lynchburg July 4th Chang has recorded hits in each of the four games he's seen action in.
HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL STAR: The Eastern League announced that three members from the Altoona Curve will represent the Curve at the E.L. mid- summer classic on July 15 at Waterfront Park in Trenton, New Jersey. LHP Daniel Moskos, SS Brian Friday and OF/1B Jason Delaney were selected to the squad.
