New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Binghamton scored three runs in the top of the tenth - including Josh Petersen's two-run single - to erase a Rock Cats' comeback and walk away with an 11-8 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Rock Cats were down early as Binghamton jumped out of the gates in the first for four runs courtesy of a shaky start by Frank Mata and his defense. Leadoff man Emmanuel Garcia drew a walk and moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt throw to first base by Mata. Jonathan Malo then laid down a sac bunt to move Garcia to third and scored on a fielding error by second baseman Toby Gardenhire that allowed Ike Davis to reach first safely. Josh Petersen followed with a two-out single that moved Davis to third. D.J. Wabick, Salvador Paniagua and Ruben Tejada followed with three consecutive RBI singles for a 4-0 lead.

The Rock Cats retaliated in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a couple of Binghamton miscues. Allan de San Miguel led off the inning and reached first after being hit by a pitch. Brandon Roberts stepped to the plate next and reached on a fielding error by second baseman Jose Coronado. Yancarlos Ortiz moved up both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Luke Hughes knocked in de San Miguel with a sacrifice fly to center field to put the ‘Cats on the board. Whit Robbins then reached base on another error by Coronado that allowed Roberts to score the second run of the inning and cut the lead in half, 4-2.

The B-Mets tacked on another run in the sixth on Malo's RBI single off of reliever Kyle Waldrop.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Rock Cats broke out for five runs as de San Miguel led off the inning with a walk and Roberts followed with a single. With Hughes batting with one out, relief pitcher Michael Antonini uncorked a wild pitch that allowed both runners to move up a base. Hughes then lined a single into left field, scoring de San Miguel. The B-Mets sent Roy Merritt to the mound in relief of Antonini, but the results were the same as a sacrifice fly by Lis knocked in Roberts for another run. Whit Robbins followed with a single and Juan Portes drew a walk to load the bases. Merritt then walked Toby Gardenhire to score Hughes from third to tie the game, 5-5. Danny Berg, who entered the game with three hits and a .086 average in 13 games with the Rock Cats, drilled a single into center field to knock in two runs to give the Rock Cats the lead. Lis added an RBI single for the Rock Cats in the eighth inning.

The ‘Cats sent closer Anthony Slama back to the mound in the ninth to close out the game, but he allowed a leadoff walk to Josh Petersen, base hit to D.J. Wabick, and another free pass to Paniagua to load the bases with no outs. Ruben Tejada delivered a base hit to left field to plate Petersen and Coronado followed with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Wabick to tie the game again.

In the tenth, Carlos Gutierrez, who came out of the bullpen to replace Slama in the ninth and forced a double play to end that inning, issued another Binghamton leadoff walk. Davis singled and Lucas Duda worked another walk from Gutierrez before Petersen dropped a single into center to score Malo and Davis. Wabick added a sacrifice fly RBI.

Mata finished with four runs - all unearned - on seven hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four. Gutierrez (1-3) suffered the loss. Connor Robertson (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the B-Mets.

Futures Watch: Rock Cats OF Rene Tosoni was not in the starting lineup for the World Team in Sunday's Futures Game in St. Louis. The game was in a rain delay in the middle of the first with the World Team holding a 2-0 lead. Tosoni - along with four of his Rock Cats' teammates - will head to the Eastern League All-Star Game in Trenton, NJ on July 15.
