Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- A beautiful sunny day at Dodd Stadium was the only bright spot of Sunday afternoon as Connecticut fell to division rival Trenton by the final of 9-2.

Trenton used the second inning to unleash an offensive explosion as the Thunder batted around scoring six runs on six hits to claim their second consecutive win in the best of four series. Big hits came by CF-Austin Krum who ripped a two RBI triple and DH-Jorge Vazquez who blasted a monster two run homerun.

The Thunder didn't wait until the second to get on the scoreboard plating their first run in their first at bat, taking advantage of a SS-Brandon Crawford error which drove in 2B-Reegie Corona.

Connecticut had their turn to take advantage of an error in the home half of the first. 2B-Brock Bond singled and CF-Mike McBryde hit a slow chopper to SS-Eduardo Nunez who sailed the throw to first over the head of 1B-Chris Malec down the right-field line. The error allowed Bond to score and McBryde came in on a 1B-Brett Pill RBI groundout to give the Defenders a 2-1 lead for the brief time.

Defenders' starter RHP-Brooks McNive (1-3) suffered the loss in his worst outing of the year allowing seven runs, six earned off of seven hits in just 1.2 innings of work. Trenton starter RHP-Kanekoa Texiera (7-5) was the opposite, firing five strong innings of four hit ball giving up two unearned runs while striking out seven in the win.

Connecticut had a ray of light in the loss however from reliever RHP-Dan Griffin who tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of McNiven striking out a season high seven and walking one.

Trenton scored lone runs in the sixth and seventh to cap off their nine runs off of twelve hit day.

Both teams will have a quick turn around for tomorrow mornings series finale. First pitch is at 10:35am at Dodd Stadium and features RHP-Garrett Broshuis (1-0) for Connecticut versus LHP-Wilkin De La Rosa (3-4) for Trenton.
