Today's Game... The Sens and R-Phils play game three of their four-game series this afternoon at Metro Bank Park. Today and tomorrow are the final two games between these two teams this season. With their win Friday night, the R-Phils have won the series. They have won 13 of the 23 games played between the two teams. At Metro Bank Park the Sens are 4-5 against the R-Phils.
Last Time Out... The Sens evened the series with the R-Phils with a 5-4 win on Saturday night. Trailing 1-0 into the bottom of the first, the Sens plated five runs, all of the runs they would need. Joel Guzman drove in two with a double, Marvin Lowrance a run with a sac fly and Bill Rhinehart capped the rally with a two-run home run. Brad Meyers made his AA debut and went the first five innings, retiring 14 of the final 15 batters he faced for the win. Josh Wilkie nailed down the final two outs for his second save on the season. Michael Daniel, Dmitri Young and Rhinehart all had two hits for the Sens.
Avoiding Akron and Bowie... The Sens are 37-50 overall and just 4-18 against Bowie and Akron. The Sens have finished their season series with Akron and still have They are 33-32 against the rest of the Eastern League this season.
June was Jumpin'... The Sens went 20-9 in June to become the first Eastern League team to win 20 games in a month this season. It was the first time they've won 20 games in a month in over five seasons.
Bullpen Notes... Since May 12, the bullpen has a 2.56 ERA. Over the past two games they have allowed nine earned runs, their worst back-to-back games since May 12. During that span they have had 27 scoreless outings and the bullpen has surrendered four home runs in their past 184.0 innings. They have given up 2 or fewer earned runs in 48 of the 58 games. They have allowed six home runs during the whole span and have combined to strike out 173 batters while walking 72.
Heating Up... Joel Guzman is 9 x 13 over his last three games and 24 x 63 (.381) with 2 HR and 14 RBI over his last 17 games...Michael Martinez is 9 x 24 (.375) in July.
Misc... Edgardo Baez leads all Eastern League outfielders with ten assists... The Sens have three players on their active roster with big league experience C Luke Montz, INF/OF Joel Guzman and LHP Matt Chico.
All-Stars... The Sens have three Southern Division All-Stars.. INF/OF Leonard Davis, LHP Jack Spradlin and RHP Josh Wilkie.
Eastern League Award Winners... LHP Jack Spradlin was the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending 6/28. He pitched in three games that week, with a line of: 8ip 2h 0r 10k 0bb 1s... INF Ofilio Castro was the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending June 14. He batted .786 (11 x 14) during the week with a HR and 7 RBI.
Current Roster... With the recent changes, the Senators have 17 players on their active roster that have spent their entire careers in the Nats farm system... The average experience on the Sens roster as of July 9 is 5.9 years... 22 of the current Senators played in the Nationals system in 2008.
Top Prospects... In Baseball America's pre-season rankings, OF Leonard Davis is #16, INF Bill Rhinehart is #17, INF Ian Desmond is #19, RHP Luis Atilano is #27, LHP Cory VanAllen is #28, and C Luke Montz is #29. Desmond has the best infield arm according to Baseball America.
