Altoona Curve News Release
Harrisburg, Pa - The Altoona Curve won their season high fifth straight game and picked up their third sweep of the season defeating Stephen Strasburg and the Harrisburg Senators (AA - Washington Nationals) 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Metro Bank Park on City Island.
The Curve (16-6) handed Strasburg the first loss of his professional career in what is reported to be his final outing in Double-A. If such is the case, Strasburg permitted 13 total hits in five Double-A starts with 10 of those hits being collected by the Curve. Furthermore, Strasburg gave up a total nine runs with eight coming against Altoona's offense.
After falling behind 1-0 early, Alex Presley plated a pair of runs with a two-run single to give Altoona a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning. The Curve would not relinquish the lead the rest of the afternoon as two more scored on a fielder's choice and throwing error by Harrisburg second baseman Michael Martinez to put Altoona up by three, 4-1.
Presley extended his hitting streak with a 1-for-4 performance moving in to third place in franchise history, hitting in 16 consecutive games.
The Curve chased Strasburg from the game after 4.2 innings after he allowed a career-high six hits, walking three and striking out four.
In the seventh inning the Curve would score two more runs without even mustering a hit. Back-to-back walks would come in to score as Josh Harrison came in on a wild pitch uncorked by reliever Hassan Pena and Jordy Mercer's sacrifice fly would bring Chase d'Arnaud home to give Altoona a 6-1 edge.
After starter Justin Wilson tossed 4.0 innings allowing just one run on four hits, the Altoona Curve bullpen tossed 5.0 innings of perfect relief. The Altoona pitchers retired the last 16 hitters in the ball game. Michael Dubee (1-0) earned the win tossing 3.0 innings of those perfect frames while Ronald Uviedo would retire six-straight over the final 2.0 innings of perfection. The last Senators (10-13) runner to reach was with two outs in the fourth inning.
The Curve will look to keep their winning streak alive as they open a four-game series in Richmond against the second place Flying Squirrels, whom they own a 2.5 game lead in the Western Division on Monday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at "The Diamond" with air time beginning at 6:35 p.m. on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates.
The Curve will give the ball to RHP Tim Alderson (2-0, 5.49) while Richmond - winners of their last six games - counter with RHP David Mixon (2-1, 2.66).
