Chesapeake Baysox News Release

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Bowie Baysox have been swept in two consecutive series following a 4-1 loss Sunday to the Richmond Flying Squirrels. After getting off to the best start in club history through the first 16 games, the Baysox have tumbled to an even 12-12 record that puts them in fourth place in the Eastern League's Western Division.

The Baysox eighth loss in a row carries a particular sting because they did so many things well but still took the loss. Starting pitcher Ryohei Tanaka put the Baysox in a good position to win, lasting six innings while giving up four runs off five hits. Relievers Jim Hoey and Chad Thall were perfect and all three pitchers combined to retire the last 12 batters Richmond sent to the plate in order.

Even the offensive production was back to a respectable level with 10 hits after getting just three in their last game against Richmond and Bowie did not commit a single error in the field.

What lost the game for the Baysox was the timeliness of those hits; they never managed more than two hits in a single inning and left nine runners on base in the game. Richmond got half as many hits as the Baysox but was far more efficient, not leaving a single player on base.

Tanaka got off to a great start, keeping a no-hitter going through the first two and one-third innings before it was abruptly broken up Squirrels second baseman Nick Noonan, who knocked his first-pitch fastball out of the park to put the Richmond on the board in the third inning.

The Flying Squirrels put together a strong fourth inning as shortstop Brandon Crawford walked to open the frame. Outfielder Roger Kieschnick hit a one-out single up the middle of the diamond that moved Crawford to third and he scored on the next play, when Clay Timpner doubled to center field. Tanaka struck out first baseman Michael Ambort with Timpner and Kieschnick on second and third, but gave up one more single to Squirrels catcher Tyler LaTorre that plated Kieschnick. The Baysox got out of the inning with the score at 4-0 when catcher Phil Britton caught LaTorre stealing second.

Designated hitter Brandon Waring led off the sixth with a single to right that Robbie Widlansky followed with an infield single to third base. The runners advanced to second and third with one out on a wild pitch thrown to outfielder Miguel Abreu, who drove Waring in with a ground out to shortstop. Widlansky moved to third on the play, but would get no further as shortstop Matt Tucker lined out to left field.

That the Baysox could generate just one run on a day when all but one player in the starting lineup picked up a hit underscored the poor timing of the Baysox 10 hits. Left fielder Tyler Henson had the most success at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to bring his season average up to .299.

The Baysox will hope to break their longest losing streak in over two years as their road trip moves on for a four-game set against the Harrisburg Senators that begins Monday at 7:05 p.m. The road trip will then continue over the weekend in Trenton before the team returns to Bowie on May 10 to open another series against the Flying Squirrels. That first game back will be the Baysox inaugural Beard-a-Palooza, where any fan with a beard may purchase half-priced lower reserved seat tickets ($7) for the game, limit one per beard. Fans who cannot grow a beard are encouraged to make one! Between-inning contests include "What's In the Beard" and longest and most colorful beards.
