Altoona Curve News Release

ALTOONA - The Altoona Curve erupted by bringing home four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to storm back from a three-run deficit to overtake the Eastern League's top team.

Altoona snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Trenton Thunder on Friday night in front of a jubilant crowd at Blair County Ballpark.

The Curve sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the eighth. After back-to-back walks with the bases loaded plated a pair of runs, Melvin Dorta again came through in clutch for Altoona. With a base hit to left field, Anthony Webster and Pedro Powell came across to score the tying and go-ahead runs.

Altoona had plenty of opportunities beforehand, though, leaving eight runners in scoring position. Prior to the onslaught in the eighth, Altoona grabbed its first run of the game with a bases-loaded single by Luis Cruz that scored Jonel Pacheco in the fourth inning. Trenton, though, responded with four unanswered runs before the Curve comeback.

Jack Wilson played his fourth straight game with the Curve on a rehab assignment and had another productive game. The Pirates' shortstop reached base four times and finished the night 2-for-3.

Starter Corey Hamman tossed six innings of solid baseball, as the lefty allowed just two runs in what was his longest outing of the season.

Newly acquired right-hander Juan Mateo (1-0) allowed just one run over two innings of work to earn his first win of the year. Josh Shortslef pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck out a pair of batters to notch the first save of his professional career.

The Curve will play the second game of their four game homestand Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Righty Derek Hankins (1-2, 3.04) will toe the rubber for Altoona, while Trenton will send right-hander George Kontos (1-4, 4.30) to the mound.

Former Steelers' legend and Super Bowl Champion Rocky Bleier will make an appearance at Blair County Ballpark, presented by the Holiday Inn Express. Bleier will throw out a ceremonial first pitch and sign autographs on the concourse. Bleier's appearance will coincide with VFW and Military Appreciation Night at the ballpark. Following the game, kids will have the chance to run the bases following of the game courtesy of Thomas Chevrolet of Bedford.

Great seats for Saturday's game and the rest of the Memorial Day homestand still remain and can be obtained over the phone at 877-99-CURVE, online at AltoonaCurve.com or in person at the Blair County Ballpark box office.
