Connolly Strong...But Erie Shutout 4-0

The SeaWolves dropped their second straight game and are a season-low 13-games under .500 following a series opening loss to the Akron Aeros, 4-0, at Canal Park on Friday night.

SeaWolves starter Jon Connolly matched Jake Westbrook, with Akron on Major League rehab, through the first six innings of the game. Connolly faced just two over the minimum through six but ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Gimenez led off the inning with a walk. With one out Stephen Head connected on a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third with one out. It was the first Aeros baserunners in scoring position in the game. Matt Whitney and Nathan Panther followed with back-to-back singles, scoring Gimenez and Head, giving the Aeros a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Aeros added to their lead. Jose Constanza led off the inning with a double. Connolly then retired the next two batters, Trevor Crowe on a liner to second and Josh Rodriguez on a strikeout looking. Gimenez stepped in and doubled home Constanza for a 3-0 Akron lead. The ‘Wolves then made a call to the bullpen for Anthony Tomey. Tomey gave up a single to Wes Hodges, scoring Gimenez, for a 4-0 lead. Tomey struck out Head to end the inning.

The SeaWolves offense was limited to just three hits in the game. Westbrook went six and the bullpen of Jeff Stevens and Scott Roehl tossed the final three innings to complete the shutout. Erie's offense did not get a runner passed second base in the game.

Connolly (0-4) worked 7.2 innings, a season-high. He allowed four runs on eight hits with a walk and he struck out a season-high four batters. He did not allow a runner passed first base in his first 6.1 innings of work in the game.

The loss drops Erie to 1-3 against the Aeros this season.
