Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- It took 10 innings at Dodd Stadium, but the Harrisburg Senators laughed last as they edged out the Connecticut Defenders by a final of 5-2.
After a scoreless first, the Senators struck first as Mike Daniel sprayed a single to center field to score Luke Montz from second base as Harrisburg grabbed a 1-0 lead.
The Sens put another across in the fourth inning as Ofilio Castro ripped an RBI double down the right field line to plate Roger Bernadina. Castro got greedy as he was cut down at third by a strong throw from Carlos Sosa. After three and half, Harrisburg had a 2-0 advantage.
The Defenders finally got on the board in the home half of the seventh, as they did so in a big way. Jake Wald blasted a home run to dead center to score Adam Witter and himself as the game was knotted at 2-2.
A scoreless eighth and ninth sent the game into extras. Connecticut came into Friday's contest with a 1-2 record in bonus baseball but the Defs would add another to the loss column as the Senators got things started during the top of the tenth.
Connecticut's closer in Sergio Romo took the bump in the tenth, poised to hold the game at a standstill. But a leadoff double by Daniel followed by back-to-back walks issued to Luis Jimenez and Garrett Guzman brought William Bergolla to the dish with one out. Bergolla delivered, sending a shallow fly ball to right. Daniel tagged, Sosa's throw was offline and Harrisburg re-claimed the lead. Bernadina singled in two more in the next at-bat as the Sens took a commanding 5-2 lead.
The Defenders could muster nothing in the home half of the tenth as Travis Ishikawa bounced into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Connecticut will face off against the Senators tomorrow night at 6:45pm. A Guinness Kazoo World Record will be attempted before the game and tickets are still available at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962. Come on out and be a part of history!
