Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA - With two-time Curve M.V.P. Adam Hyzdu in attendance on Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark, Altoona was unable to crack the code of the Reading Phillies who hung on to defeat the Curve, 4-3.
Behind right-hander Tyson Brummett, a seventh round pick in the June 2007 draft, the Curve bats were silenced as the 23-year old allowed just six hits in his Double-A debut.
Brummett, who had pitched earlier this season for Lakewood and Clearwater tossed 8 2/3 innings in the win and allowed just the three runs - all of which scored after Brummett left game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Trailing 1-0 most of the contest, Reading scored three unearned runs in the top of the eighth off Pat Bresnehan to take their third straight victory and the fourth consecutive series win against Altoona.
Altoona mounted a valiant comeback effort, but fell short.
The Curve scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Sam Walls, who notched his third save of the year for Reading, uncorked a wild pitch, which scored Jonel Pacheco. The Curve grabbed a pair of runs on a two-run single by Luis Cruz to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.
Miguel Perez represented the winning run for the Curve, but hit into a game-ending fielder's choice to send the Curve to a 30-40 overall record.
Lefty Corey Hamman (3-6) started for Altoona and pitched a remarkable six innings. The only blemish on his record was a solo home run he allowed to Jeremy Slayden in the top of the fifth which was on of just four hits Hamman surrendered.
Thursday's win for Reading is the tenth in 14 tries against Altoona this year which assures the R-Phils a winning record against the Curve this season.
The Curve will turn the page and welcome the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) to BCB for a 7:05 p.m. contest on Friday night. Right-hander Luis Munoz (NR) will make his first start of the season for Altoona after being optioned from AAA Indianapolis. The Baysox will send right-hander Brad Bergesen (7-1, 2.16) to the hill.
Great seats for Friday's contest, which will feature post-game fireworks are still available. Tickets can be obtained over the phone by calling 877-99-CURVE, online at AltoonaCurve.com, or in person at the Blair County Ballpark box office.
