Curletta Helps Lead Loons to 6-2 Win

Midland, Mich. - Joey Curletta was a home run shy of the cycle as he helped lead the Great Lakes Loons (Class-A/Los Angeles Dodgers) to a 6-2 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays) on Thursday night. The game was the opener of a seven-game road trip for Bowling Green.

Juniel Querecuto helped the Hot Rods race out to an early lead in the first inning. He sent the first pitch of the game over Curletta's head in right field for a double. Kean Wong followed with a hard-single to center field, and it was misplayed by Jacob Scavuzzo, which allowed Querecuto to score from second base.

Great Lakes would level the score in their half of the first. Jesmuel Valentin drew a walk to start the frame, He would advance to second on a walk, and then score when Curletta doubled down the left-field line.

Curletta's triple was part of a three-run rally in the third inning. With one out, Scavuzzo singled to center field, then quickly was advanced home when Kyle Farmer doubled to right-center field. Curletta then hit a ball in the gap in right-center field, which plated Farmer and Curletta ended up at third. He would score on a single by Josmar Cordero. The Loons led 4-1 after three innings of play.

The Hot Rods brought a run back in the fifth. Alexander Simon extended his hitting streak to a season-high six games with a lead-off double. He would advance to third base on a wild pitch, and then scored when Wong grounded into a fielder's choice.

Two sacrifice flies would seal the victory for Great Lakes. Alex Santana drove home Paul Hoenecke in the seventh, and Dillon Moyer scored on Valentin's sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Scott Barlow (1-0) worked five innings and struck out six batters to get the win. He allowed two unearned runs before exiting the ballgame.

Bowling Green starter German Marquez (1-2) conceded four runs on six hits and was lifted in the fourth inning. The loss was his second of the season.

The Hot Rods will try and even the series Friday night, as they'll take on the Loons in game two of a four-game set at Dow Diamond. The Pepsi Pre-Game Show will get underway at 5:50 p.m. CT on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket, and first pitch will be tossed at 6:05 p.m.
