
Whitecaps Down Captains 5-2

Lake County Captains News Release
(Comstock Park, MI)- Raph Rymes singled home Harold Castro to add an insurance run in the eighth inning, and the Whitecaps defeated the Captains 5-2 on Thursday. Lake County has now dropped five straight games and their record on the road fell to 2-18.
Lake County (11-29) scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Paul Hendrix singled to begin the inning. Eric Haase then singled him to third base. Ziomek, the West Michigan pitcher tried to pick-off Haase and threw the ball away. Hendrix scored and Haase advanced to third. Ziomek then balked and Haase scored. The Captains led 2-0.
West Michigan (24-16) took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Raph Rhymes singled with one out to begin the inning. With two outs, Ben Verlander walked. Tyler Gibson followed with a ground rule double to right field and Rhymes scored. With two runners in scoring position, Willy Adames singled to center field and both Verlander and Gibson scored. West Michigan led 3-2 headed to the fifth inning.
With the score 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, West Michigan added on. With one out, Willy Adames walked. Adames scored from first on a double by Bennent Pickar the score was now 5-2 West Michigan. That was the final.
RHP Mitch Brown (0-6) started for Lake County. Mitch pitched four and two thirds innings and allowed five hits, three earned runs, two walks and he struck out two. Mitch took the loss. Kerry Doane entered in relief. Doane pitched two and one third innings and allowed four hits, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts. Luis Dejesus pitched the eighth for Lake County and allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk.
LHP Kevin Ziomek (3-3) started for West Michigan. Ziomek earned the win after pitching five and two thirds innings. Ziomek allowed two earned runs on three hits, he walked four and struck out nine. Matt Davenport pitched the final three and one third innings for the Whitecaps. Davenport did not allow a run, he just yielded one hit and no walks. He fanned four. Davenport earned his first save of the season.
The Captains will remain in Comstock Park, Mcihigan on Friday to begin a three game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps. Lake County will start RHP Robbie Aviles (0-1, 1.47) and West Michigan will counter with RHP Chad Green (0-1, 3.80). First Pitch is at 6:35 PM from Fifth Third Ballpark.
